Blinding with the A-Team

It is always a great time when our dear friend Mark McWilliams of Arista stops in for a glass of wine, but we sure weren’t expecting the night to become one grand blind tasting. Last night, Mark stopped in to share a few of his favorite wines from Arista’s latest release, but even before he arrived, we had a few bottles that told the greatness to come…

The evening started with a bottle of 1990 Krug. This specific bottle had been opened, corked for 2 days and kept in perfect temperature. For being opened for 2 days, this 1990 Krug exemplifies the power and longevity of Krug. There wasn’t a single bubble in my glass and the wine was alive and smoking!!  There was nothing short of awesomeness in this glass: Deep citrus, baked apples, toasted almond, warm brioche and deep spice. I don’t need a reminder that Krug is King, but WOW! For being opened for 2 days, this bottle of Krug was rocking!

1999 Coche Dury

The Holy Grail of Meursault (as pictured on the label)

The next bottle could be predestined as Wine of the Month- 1999 Coche Dury Meursault- MIND BLOWN!!  If I could have one word to describe this Meursault, it would be ‘GOLDEN’. The glass was filled with the color of a beautiful sunrise with energetic aromas of candied pineapple fruit and dried white blossoms and a noticeable note of flinty minerals.  This wine was a perfect bottle. Creamy mid-weight filled with poached pear, sweet cream, candied ginger, brown butter, preserved Meyer lemons, sweet fatty nut and deep spice with softer notes of savory sweet herbs. The finish was lengthy, tying in the gorgeous minerals, ripe fruit and brown butter in a beautiful close. Coche Dury Meursault has a breath that takes Meursault into a godly level. Our minds are still boggling…

Arista

We then went into a flight of Mark’s favorite Pinot Noirs from Arista. In 2012, Matt Courtney left the famous Pinot cult Marcassin to work with Mark McWilliams of Arista, launching Arista into a whole new level of amazing wines. As noted by Wine Spectator “Arista achieved what many wineries only hope for.” -after tasting through the 2014 Pinot Noirs, we unanimously agree.

2014 Arista Russian River Valley Pinot Noir- Vibrant raspberries and juicy cherries dominate the palate by an uber supple texture with hints of cocoa and cola nut.

2014 Arista Toboni Vineyard Pinot Noir- Seductive single vineyard Pinot Noir from the heart of Russian River Valley. The richness of this wine has hedonistic powers while minerals and ripe earth balances the wine and enchants the palate. The Toboni has the most savory herbs and baking spices but still delivers that signature kirsch and sweet RRV fruit that we all know and love.

2014 Arista Ferrington Vineyard Pinot Noir- A head turning Pinot Noir from Anderson Valley! Wild mixberry drives the wine with layers of dense forest floor, black cherry and cedar. The Ferrington offers beautiful complexity, silky smooth richness and incredible length.

The next flight was a grand blind tasting with some of Graileys’ best blind tasters!

3.03.2016

3.03.2016 binder

1991 Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet- Deep golden hue. Rich, mouthcoating texture that delivers candied citrus, overripe orchard fruit, dense baking spice, ripe honey and wild field of yellow flowers, pollen, honey bees, herbs, dirt and all!

1997 Thomas Moillard Romanee St. Vivant- A captivating Grand Cru with rustic brambly dark fruit and dried herbs, sanguine, peppercorn medley and hints of sweet olives. Blood orange zest, iron and dry clay in the finish.

1982 Ducru Beaucaillou- This started as a solid Bordeaux with power, concentrated black fruit and edgy herbs but as it opened in the glass, solid turned into handsome and by the end it was night, the wine fully awoke and became just flat out sexy! Every element melded together into one beautiful, seamless glass.

2000 Clos l’Eglise- Wow! Dark, juicy black and blue fruit dominated the palate with dense layers of liquid granite, rich violets, cocoa, mocha, espresso beans, vanilla and cream.

1986 Lafite- I don’t think my glass had quite woken up. Everything was dark, deep and condensed. The pedigree was transparent in its structure. AJ noted blackpepper and plum with spectacular notes of sandalwood and pine. This was the most powerful bottle on the table.

2004 Paul Jaboulet Crozes Hermitage- The surprise of the night. This Crozes Hermitage has the power that mimics a great Gevrey Chambertin, the rusticity of a smoking Morey St. Denis; overall, showing an elegance that mirrored a good bottle of somewhat youthful red Burgundy. The vintage was called by our members practically right to the month and day of release! Signature notes of black olives, bramble and garrigue were overlooked as softer red cherry, iron and rose had us captivated.

1996 dp Oenotheque

1996 Dom Perignon Oenotheque- This was a stunner as always, yet this bottle showed more advanced flavors than the ’96 Oenotheque I have experienced before. Rich in style with ripe fruit in the core and bracing minerals that gives this Champagne it’s power.

2013 arista banfield chard

Mark closed the fantastic night with a stunning bottle of 2013 Arista Banfield Vineyard Chardonnay. A mere baby compared to the wines we had all night, but a gorgeous one at that! Vibrant overall with bright lemons, apple blossoms, rich spice and somewhat nervy minerality. This would be a great bottle to revisit with at least another 5 years time in the cellar.

3.03.2016 lineup

What a great night!

Other Good bottles that were opened…

2012 Chase Hayne Vineyard Zinfandel Reserve

2014 Jean Foillard Morgon Corcelette

2012 Quintus de Dragon

2009 CVNE Imperial Rioja Reserva

An Inside Look Into A Day At Graileys

As most of you know, every evening at Graileys we open mind-boggling bottles that are often from the deepest parts of our beloved members’ cellars; all of which you can find the most memorable bottles in our Graileys blog. But what gets opened within the Graileys walls before the prime hour that starts wine-o’clock is a whole other world of fantastic wines. Between a lot of premier league football, Avila’s Tex Mex and jamming to Ryan’s playlist of nuevo college station, jazz and Jay Z, we brokers work hard to find that next up and coming wine from the best parts of the fine wine world to go into your cellar and your glass. Our morning meetings consist of tastings of current releases, verticals of the cults and top features of the underdogs. Someone has to do all the hard work. Here are some recent stars that have us completely spellbound and you will find them to be quite compelling as well. These are beauties that you will want to snag- contact your broker to do so!

Wicker

A 7 Year Vertical of Wicker Vineyards- Last week Ron Wicker of Wicker Vineyards brought a 7 year vertical of his Cabernet and we are so excited to have tasted his exceptional wines! A true definition of a cult winery, never making more than 300 cases in any year, and selling exclusively to a very small and select mailing list, Wicker Vineyards is an under the radar Napa estate you want to know. Ron creates beautiful Cabernets with gorgeously ripe sweet black fruit balanced by the minerality and transparency of his small 7 acre vineyard of sheer Howell Mountain terroir. In 2010, he was acclaimed Grower of the Year by the Napa Valley Register and after tasting his wines, we can see why! Luck for all of us, Ron likes to hold his wines back and release when he feels his powerful Cabernets are showing at their apex. Each vintage had its own personality and from the lineup, the 2004 Wicker Cabernet ($99.95/btl) left the biggest impression with rich complexities that encompassed the entire wine experience from the lively aromatics to the final breath in the finish. With its generous black fruit and its eleven year bottle age for an uber smooth palate, this is an attention grabbing Cabernet that you do not want to miss. We were lucky to get a mere 2 cases, so grab them while you can!

2012 Trinoro

Tenuta di Trinoro Toscana Rosso- from one of my personal favorite Tuscan estates, Andre Franchetti is the trailblazer behind this small Tuscan project as well as the mastermind leading Sicily with his enchanting wines of Mt. Etna. Trinoro is his flagship wine and the near perfect scoring 2009 vintage is one of the estate’s most impressive vintages within the last decade! This is an outstanding Cabernet Franc driven Super Tuscan that will blow your mind! We tasted the 2012 vintage earlier this week and the sheer power within this wine will knock you down to the ground! Also a top scoring wine with 98 points from Antonio Galloni, Cabernet Sauvignon is the driving force behind the 2012 with intense black and red currants, sweet cigar, ripe tobacco leaves and luscious purple florals. Both the 2012 current release and the 2009 library release are available but quantities are extremely limited; so act fast to get your hands on these rare Super Tuscans that will knock your socks off! Talk about under the radar, Tenuta di Trinoro is barely heard of in the United States, but if there is to be an estate that can rival Tuscan legends such as Tenuta San Guido’s Sassicaia and Ornellaia, Franchetti’s Tenuta di Trinoro is the Tuscan underdog that can accomplish such a feat.

2009 Tenuta di Trinoro- 3 six packs available!

Graileys Price: $249 bottle | $1494 per six pack OWC

99 Points Robert Parker- The 2009 Tenuta di Trinoro is indeed an outstanding blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. The wine is showing beautifully right now and promises more excellence to carry it forward over the years. At the moment, it is seamless and infinite with a superior sense of balance and dark fruit integrity. It speaks in a loud, clear and articulate voice. The wine’s appearance shows a dark, impenetrable color that underlines the ideal growing conditions of the vintage and the slow fruit-ripening. The aromas are stunning and perfectly balanced, showing both elegance and power. The tannins deliver dimension and a firmly unyielding quality that bodes very well for the future evolution of this stunning wine.

 Passopisciaro

Sicilian Star- Passopisciaro Etna Rosso- I find Passopisciaro wines to be some of the most serious, quality driven wines coming from the high slopes of Sicily’s active volcano, Mt. Etna. The grape is Nerello Mascalese and when done right, these wines have the beautiful minerality and elegant fruit reminiscent of a fine red Burgundy. We were honored to taste the 2007 vintage along with the current release vintages of 2012 Passopisciaro, 2013 single Contrada (cru) Porcaria, and the thought provoking 2012 Franchetti, a Petit Verdot driven wine that expresses enticing aromas of dark dense and jammy fruit, smoke and sweet tobacco. What I love about Andre Franchetti is that he doesn’t fear creating a wine that is outside the norm of the region and his finished wines not only articulate his rogue style but also beautifully expresses the individual site that goes into each of his labels.

2012 Passopisciaro, Sicilia Rosso

Graileys Price: $39.95 bottle | $239.70 six-pack

93 Points Robert Parker- An IGT Terre Siciliane wine, the 2012 Passopisciaro is 100% Nerello Mascalese aged in botte grande for 18 months. The wine’s bouquet reveals volcanic tones of brimstone and ash with pretty contours of wild berry, cassis and blue flower. There’s a pretty sense of lift and buoyancy in the mouth thanks to the pure energy and intensity of its fruit. Despite the wine’s light color, this is a firecracker red in terms of its appeal to the nose and palate.

Gandona

From our dear friends in Pritchard Hill comes Gandona Estate- this is a property you need to put on your radar and in your cellar! Overlooking the enchanting Lake Hennessy that gives Pritchard Hill its Garden of Eden like effects in its wines and directly next door to another Graileys favorite Colgin, Gandona is a younger estate that articulates bold flavors and fantastic richness by Napa superstar Philippe Melka. We tried the 2012 and 2013 Gandona Cabernets this week and the Encosta is one of the best second label Cabernets I have had yet with bright and juicy black fruit and uber smooth texture right out of the gate! Their top label Gandona Estate Cabernet is also flashy with generous fruit, but has incredible structure that will take you well into the next 2 decades! If you are a Cabernet lover at any level, Gandona should be in your next glass.

2012 Gandona “Encoste” Cabernet Sauvignon

Graileys Price: $89.95 per bottle | $1079 per case

An incredible value for Pritchard Hill Cab that will drink like a champ for 10 years. The wine shows spicy, foresty notes, a touch of tobacco leaf, moderate structure and blackcurrant and black raspberry fruit in a medium-bodied, juicy, alluring and seductive style. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.

2012 Gandona Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

Graileys Price: $224.95 per bottle | $2699 per case

96 Pts Robert Parker: Living up to the potential predicted last year, the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is fabulous. One hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon aged 22 months in 80% new French oak, there are 500 cases of this terrific wine. With its inky purple color, a glorious nose of blackberry and blueberry liqueur, full-bodied mouthfeel, dense, pure notes interwoven with camphor, charcoal embers and spring flowers, this is stunning stuff and a great example of the Estate’s potential. Drink now-2025+. Formerly known as the Bob Long Estate high on Pritchard Hill, this 17 acres is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grand Cru Night: Burgundy’s Elite

Truly a spectacular night, we hosted an unforgettable Graileys dinner with a close group of cherished members and an evening of Burgundy’s elite. This Grand Cru Burgundy dinner goes down on the books as one of the most memorable dinners we have hosted yet! Each bottle tells its own terroir, own story and must be recognized.

Grand Cru Burg night 2.26.2016

Burgundy’s Elite

2010 Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet Les Folatieres (out of Magnum)- Great energy to start the night! The 2010 Leflaive Les Folatieres holds great weight, power and depth while expressing a great breath of spiced lemon zest, green and golden apples, ripe pears. Deep spice tones, almond skin, wild yellow flowers and slight cream counterplays beautifully with focused chalk, limestone minerality and citrus.

Grand Cru Burg Night- 2

2006 Camille Giroud Chambertin- What a stunner! Burgundy’s signature red fruit was the highest toned of the lineup with just ripe red cherry and ripe cranberries; red tea, iron, raw herbs, gorgeous floral notes and concentrated note of cinnamon intermingled beautifully with the weightier flavors of fresh farmyard and deep minerals. Deep round body and silky in texture, an impressive start.  This was showing at a beautiful spot that will continue to shine for many years to come.

2011 Leroy Chambolle Musigny- Oh man… Leroy… There is something about Leroy that is always gorgeous, always mysterious, always distinguished in sight, aromatics and in the palate. You haven’t had Burgundy until you have experienced a Burgundy by Leroy and it really says something when Leroy’s village rouge is on par with nearly any famed Burgundian’s top Premier Cru or Grand Cru wine. Everything in this bottle was loud and generous. Bright red cherry and wild raspberries so juicy it neared tones of raspberry liqueur, ripe sexy red fruit lead the way followed by multidimensional flavors of fresh sweet herbs and a subtle hint of mint, a breastfed baby’s natural souvenir and dense spice with deep minerality that just blew me away. Chunks of limestone and chalk were beautifully balanced by each element’s powerful and concentrated nature. Leroy is raw, powerful, seductive and complex and this Chambolle label expresses nothing short of Grand Cru like pedigree in the glass.

2012 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Chambolle Musigny Les Amoureuses- This top Premier Cru expressed the most spice from the lineup with striking red tea, cinnamon, cardamom and fresh nutmeg. The red fruit was also high toned with super floral aromatics and transparent terroir: powerful notes of chalk and limestone, fresh leather, leaves, forest floor and iron. Powerful weight yet very graceful in texture that lead to a lengthy finish of fresh turned soil, red fruit and spice.

1996 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Cuvee Vieilles Vignes- Wow, what a beauty! Dense, deep and dark were my tasting notes for everything in this wine! Dark red and black cherries, juicy raspberries and cassis all densely coats the complex and seamless flavors of leather, roasted herbs, savory brown mushrooms, riper herbs, compost, leather, dark clay and iron. The finish is incredibly lengthy. Fantastic showing of Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny VV- it was awake and alive!

Grand Cru Burg night- Vosne 2

2011 Domaine de Montille Vosne Romanee Aux Malconsorts Cuvee Christiane- From the few rows of vines that divides La Tache from the rest of Aux Malconsorts, this superb bottle stood out for its power; an impenetrable wine that will show its beauty until the end of time. Masculine weight and body with a gorgeous cashmere texture that held its energetic flavors tightly together. Wild red and purple petals jumped out from the glass first followed by green herbs and green stems with brighter notes of spice, white mushroom, mint, red tobacco, forest floor, leather and powdered chalk. This is stunning indeed, but I anticipate experiencing this bottle once more in 10 years time.

2011 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux- Everything was intense in this one, much like the de Montille’s Aux Malconsorts, the power exceeds its expectations. Candied red cherry, ripe herbs, dense chalk, purple flowers, wild rose, truffles, forest floor and chalk. As mouthcoating as red Burgundy gets with compacted and intense flavors and a long, savory finish.

2012 A.F. Gros Richebourg- The crowd’s winning bottle. The AF Gros Richbourg was a stunner! In one of our member’s memorable words, “The Richebourg is sick!!” Very ripe red and blue fruit, crème de cassis, sweet sage, plump herbs, blue flowers, cola and red licorice all jumps out of the glass. Powerful yet more expressive with amazing elegance. Words cannot do the experience of this bottle of wine any justice.

Grand Cru Burg Night- 1993 DRC RSV

1993 Domaine Romanee Conti Romanee St. Vivant- BOOM!! Amazing, even for a not so revered vintage, the pedigree delivers the finest. Beautiful fruit, concentrated flavors, compelling minerals, everlasting finish.

Grand Cru Burg Night- 2004 DRC Richbourg

2004 Domaine Romanee Conti Richebourg- DOUBLE BOOM!!!  Our most gracious host closed the table with this bottle of pure OMG from the Burgundy gods above. From “Holy F” to “Unicorn tears”, this was the shocking bottle of the night. There were other creative, straight out naughty descriptions flashing about at the table that one can imagine how a bottle of DRC Richebourg would taste like.

Grand Cru Burg Night- 1990 Krug

1990 Krug- Really, this night just keeps getting better and better. One simply cannot Burg without a bottle or two of Champagne in between and a Grand Cru night such as this calls for nothing short than a bottle of 1990 Krug.

Grand Cru Burg Night- 1987 Joseph Drouhin Musigny

1987 Joseph Drouhin Musigny- generously opened by our beloved MF, this bottle is aged Burgundy at its finest! Dried clay and iron lead the way with layers of preserved orange zest, blood and dried rose with subtle hints of red cherries, strawberry field and spice. The finish is extraordinarily long and beautiful. Everything about this bottle was perfect.

Grand Cru Burg Night- 1985 Missery Volnay

1985 P. Misserey Volnay- opened by ‘The most interesting man in the world’, this ’85 Volnay showed brighter, luscious fruit and of more youth than the ’87 Musigny. Red raspberries, black cherry, red plums with fleshier rose and spice. Silky in texture and a haunting finish.

Grand Cru Burg Night- 1998 PinotGris SGN Zind Humbrecht Clos Jebsal

1998 Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris SGN- Christmas fruit cake, spice box, bees wax, dried figs and cherry jam galore!

With an extraordinary lineup that was hand selected by Simon, a menu prepared by Chef Sharon Hage and all of the other outstanding bottles that were most generously shared around the table, this was a Grand Cru Night indeed.

Just Another Tuesday at Graileys

Graileys going up… on Tuesday… Popping HB and Lafite on a Tuesday…

All rapping aside, we had a phenomenal evening at Graileys with our dearest members opening not only the old and rare, but also the new and exciting wines from regions that are typically overlooked by most. First to be of note, the 1989 Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Reserve Chateauneuf du Pape was the bottle which started the night and was a spectacular wine to savor indeed. Wild layers just flew all over the palate with preserved raspberry, stewed strawberry and intriguing layers of blood orange zest mixed with leather, dried blood and preserved meat. Dried bay leaves and wild herbs, eucalyptus with espresso roast, crushed black pepper, black licorice, dried star anise. The palate was silky in texture with an encompassing mid-palate leading into an incredibly lengthy finish as the wine continued to expand and deliver multidimensional flavors with subtle hints of dark cocoa at the end.

1978 lafite mag

Going into Bordeaux, a trio of First Growths sailed by the Graileys tables complimentary of Purple Jacket Bill with a 1981 Haut Brion, 1986 Haut Brion and 1978 Lafite in Magnum. The ’78 Lafite Mag was the wine of the night with a precision of quality in fruit, structure, minerals and length. The ’81 Haut Brion was very soft and elegant with lighter tones of dried red and black cherry, soft leather and dust while the ’86 HB had more black fruit to give with louder flavors of roasted minerals, dried spice and charred herbs with a more garrigue-like, profound and concentrated delivery.

2014 jean foillard morgon

We also enjoyed a few outstanding bottles of wine not often seen in the Graileys walls, nor that much in the state of Texas. From the most revered cru of Beaujolais, oh-no… you stopped reading didn’t you… seriously please continue, the 2014 Jean Foillard Morgon Cuvee Corcelette is a Cru Beaujolais that will blow your mind! This ‘little’ Beaujolais was on the table with the big boys and we couldn’t stop talking about it all night! Made by one of the best members of the “Gang of Four”- a group of quality and terroir driven producers from the Morgon Cru in Beaujolais, this cru Beaujolais screams awesome with candied cherry and sweet strawberry tones with hints of lemon, ripe herbs, crushed gravel and chalk all tied together by a one of a kind purity, velvety texture and lengthy finish- a true baby Bourgogne rouge that drinks like a champ! I bet this will age beautifully too. We were only allocated 1 case and I had to practically beg for more! We have a few bottles left… grab them while you can!

2000 lopez de heredia

My favorite Spanish producer, the 2000 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Rosado was absolutely compelling! Talk about savory goodness! Signature marks of rancio and oak kept us intrigued the whole night. The texture was silky yet coating, waxy, near dense in mouthfeel. Dried raspberry, seared sweet vidalias, cheese rind, red tea, rose and a touch of sour cream all took over the palate seamlessly. The finish was beautifully lengthy bringing back the somewhat salty notes of sharp cheese, raw nuts and dried red fruit.

2012 Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon- For those who know me, you already know that VHR is my latest Napa Cabernet jam! This is not your typical slutty, flashy Napa Cabernet that goes down easy. VHR has broad shoulders, deeper flavors and darker minerals that take over the palate like a boss. Pretty much anyone can make a good 2012 Napa Cabernet, but this is a product of an exceptional winemaker from an outstanding western Oakville plot hidden between our other favorites Futo, Harlan and Bond.

Mid Week Bubbles and Burg

We started the week with spectacular bubbles, great friends and a flight of exceptional Champagnes. Krug is King here at Graileys and a bottle of 2000 Krug vintage brut was no doubt one of the first knockouts of the week. Krug’s signature power, weight, uber luxurious feel and multidimensional flavors never cease to amaze us. Our favorite Champagne comrades also opened up a 1996 Billecart Salmon Grande Cuvee and one of our favorite grower Champagnes Egly Ouriet Grand Cru V.P. Extra Brut.

Champers

The ’96 Billecart Salmon Grande Cuvee {Champagne Dave} was showing particularly well with gorgeous flavors intermingling together in perfect harmony. Fabulous deep minerality that showed at the beginning of the palate took a step back to let the baked apples and pears seamlessly collide with cream and soft baked bread. There were subtle hints of white flowers throughout the mid and towards the ridiculously long finish, the minerals came back for a last hurrah to give this twenty year old Champagne a breath of freshness. The acidity was perfect and the tiny tight pearls made this silky, creamy Champagne that much more seductive.

Our little grower Egly Ouriet Grand Cru V.P. Extra Brut {Aggie Julie} showed no little features against these vintage big boys- however the floral notes shot out a lot brighter than the first two. It made me think of the life in the South East spending lazy summer days eating wild honeysuckles or reading a book under the gigantic magnolia tree. With all that said, this Champagne was no light matter; it was an exuberant, fleshy and wonderfully rich Champagne driven by Pinot Noir, picked at its optimal ripeness off super old vines from the Grand Cru villages of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. We greeted the week by catching up with great friends while sipping on a few bottles of beautiful Champagne, the only thing that was missing were two little Fox’s.

1990 Jadot Clos des Ursules

The star of the week was a bottle of 1990 Louis Jadot Beaune Clos de Ursules Premier Cru Monopole {Dr. Scott}. This was an ideal glass of red Burgundy. Killer red fruit from dried cherries to currants and kirsch with wild mushrooms, truffles, soft forest floor and sweet ripe spice. Everything about this bottle was ON. Aromatics were lifted and gorgeously expressive, flavors were expansive and ripe, texture was silky smooth, and the finish was incredibly deep. This bottle was a fantastic example of how a great Burgundy should be.

Other stunners this week….

An Extraordinary Evening with Penfolds and Our Old Friend D’Lynn Proctor

Last week we were honored to welcome back our dear old friend D’Lynn Proctor of Penfolds wines for an extraordinary evening tasting through Penfolds’ iconic wines, featuring a special vertical of their flagship Bin 95 Grange. Penfolds Grange needs no introduction, and after the celebrated SOMM documentary and the more recent film SOMM: Into the Bottle, D’Lynn Proctor has been launched into ultra sommelier star and has been on the road hosting extravagant events for Penfolds as Penfolds Brand Ambassador. With a schedule packed with daily travel, D’Lynn made it a point to come back home to the Big D to once again grace the Graileys floor for this one night event!

penfolds dinner 7

We started the night with a flight of Penfold’s blue chip Cabernets of 2010 and 2013, kicking off the flight with the Cabernet, Shiraz blend- 2013 Bin 389. This is a great everyday drinker for those who seek a powerful red for a fraction of the Grange price- no wonder it’s often called Poor Man’s Grange! Ripe blackberry and purple plums coat the palate with hints of cedar, wild herbs and cherry… mmm… “Baby Grange” indeed. Next we poured the 2013 Bin 407, a Cabernet Sauvignon with clear definition for varietal purity that seductively highlights Penfold’s signature depth of flavors and powerful structure. Lastly the 2010 Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon really knocked out the flight! This is Penfold’s mac-daddy Cabernet that will literally knock you off your feet on the first sip. Wild red and black fruit, deep tones of vanilla, cream and freshly ground espresso beans all fused together for one weighty blow.

Penfolds dinner

Palate Cleanse- NV Henriot Rose Champagne- great rose Champagne to freshen up the palate after a flight of high structured reds right before we go into a vertical of Grange

Penfolds Grange

The Second Flight: Vertical of Penfolds Bin 95 Grange.

2009- The most rustic of the trio with brooding black fruit, roasted spices and meat with dried purple flowers and dried wild herbs.

2010- The most polished, approachable and down-right sexy of the three with an overall brighter core. Vibrant red and black fruit, polished spices and fresh herbs combined with fresh forest floor, leather, licorice, cedar and blackberry liquor.

2011- Sheer power. A mere baby, the 2011 had all the best traits leaping out of the glass simultaneously with Penfolds’ full force. Talk about punched in the mouth with flavor! Black cherry, plums, black currants and cassis were in battle with ripe spice from black pepper, star anise and clove to vanilla, espresso and deep earth. This is what I imagine a glass of the earth’s core would taste like.

1998 grange

We capped the Penfolds tasting with two extraordinary bottles of 1998 Grange opened very graciously by our beloved member Bill. These were no doubt the best bottles of the night! These ‘98’s easily rank with the very best vintages of Grange. Beautifully compelling and seductive with chocolate covered cherries, dark plum and lingering smoke. The wild spices, tar and black pepper were all cooled down by crème de cassis, toasted coconut and sweet cream. The flavors were thickly coated and out of this world, but the texture of the ’98 is what blew my mind. After trying a lineup of fairly youthful Penfolds icons that has the power to literally knock one down to the ground, these ’98 Grange really expressed the grace within Grange with the touch of the finest cashmere one can find. Thanks Bill!!

The Other Mind Boggling Bottle of the Night: 1961 Haut Brion.

1961 haut brion

Wow… this was a dynamic bottle of wine. It seemed closed during the first hour in the glass with only notes of deep bark and bitter chestnut shells. But after a few hours when the wine had a chance to open up, the energy and power of Haut Brion really blew up into a gorgeous, profound almighty glass of wine. Deep black cherry and red currant came alive, seamlessly immersed with rich notes of chocolate, toasted cedar and deep compost with one of the most lengthy finishes experienced from a bottle of wine. I am honored to say that a bottle of 1961 Haut Brion has been eternally implanted into my memory.

Gran Reserva Kind of Night

Last week we had an honor to host Kathy Simpson and our very own Ivan the Fiver as they shared with us a fantastic lineup of Cabernets from vines all of which are planted and managed by our dear friend Jim Barbour! Jim only works with the A-Team of Napa so you know the wines are going to be exceptional! We featured three of our favorite Cabernets, starting with Jim Barbour’s personal wine: 2011 Barbour Vineayrds Cabernet. The dreadful green stigma of the 2011 vintage has made such a strong impact in the Cabernets of Napa but with the right vineyard management and winemaking team, the 2011 vintage is a beautiful vintage that is not to be missed! Take Jim Barbour’s 2011 Barbour Vineyards Cabernet… made by Celia Welch, this Cabernet offers gorgeous dark luxardo cherries, black plums and deep graphite minerality lead the nose while rich layers of vanilla beans and caramel broaden the palate. The flavors are all encompassing and its body is broad shouldered with ripe tannins all leading into a smooth finish. Graileys doesn’t always open and drink 2011, but when we do- it’s 2011 Barbour Vineyards Cabernet… or 2011 Tusk :)

Our second Barbour managed Cabernet was the 2012 Jones Family Cabernet Sauvignon. From the heart of Calistoga and made by Thomas Rivers Brown, the 2012 Jones Family Cabernet showed the most aromatics and opulence of the lineup with plush blueberry, crème de cassis, red plums and sweet baking spices driving the wine. There was an underlying layer of sweet, ripe herbs, leather and chocolate that gave the Cabernet another dimension to the delicious fruit core.

One of my personal favorite Cabernets- the bold, polished, and powerful 2012 Perfect Season Cabernet Sauvignon, the personal project of Norma Hunt, widow of the late Lamar Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs. Here is another Napa dream team- Jim Barbour and Philippe Melka, this bottle of wine commands your attention from the nose to the finish with intense aromas of dark red and black fruit, lavender, cassis, and sweet vanilla and spice. The palate delivered these same flavors with an added layer of molten graphite that really pulled the wine together and with its polished tannins, voluptuous body, and long finish- this is a near perfect bottle of wine for my palate. It was terrific to show Jim Barbours works side by side, what a fantastic tasting indeed!

Also last week, I started something a little different for Graileys. I am taking some of our Graileys tastings outside the Graileys wine walls and into some of the best local restaurants in the Big D! For my first Graileys pop up wine dinner, I took my guests to the heart of Spain with a Gran Reserva Rioja wine dinner at Dallas’ hottest tapas restaurant, Casa Rubia! With four courses of phenomenal Spanish flair, we dove into the diverse regions, styles and vintages of Rioja.

Casa Rubia dinner 1

The first course was a family style serving of Spanish cheeses, charcuterie, Bocadillos and Boquerones all paired with a bottle of white Rioja- 2009 Marques de Murrieta Campellania Rioja Blanco Reserva. This is 100% Viura at its finest. From ripe pear to tropical tangerines, the fruit is ripe and fleshy, but the minerals and deep spice are what drives the wine from extended aging in new French barrels.

casa rubia course 2

The Second course was Tuna a la Plancha- Grilled Yellowfin Tuna with potato confit, turnips, Hollander mussels and charred arugula all in a saffron broth. This course was paired to a Gran Reserva vertical of 1990, 1994 and 1995 Marques de Caceres and the pairing was phenomenal! From the rich sauce of the dish to the deeper weight in each component of the dish really stood up to these aged, more modern in style Tempranillo. The 1990 was showing at its prime with ultra silky texture and completely melded flavors while the 1994 was the most complex and the 1995 had the most power.

Veritcal Gran Reserva

The final savory course was Beeman Ranch Teres Major- wood grilled shoulder with roasted mushrooms, crispy potatoes and black truffle aioli paired with a lineup of more traditional, yet more youthful Rioja Tinto: the benchmark of traditional Rioja 2005 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904, the single vineyard 2005 Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial and the 2010 Remondo Palacios Propiedad Garnacha from Rioja Baja. The 2005 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 was my star of the flight with more savory tones of ripe dill, wild herbs, leather, cured meat and bright red fruit. Made from La Rioja Alta’s most famous single vineyard, La Plana, the ’05 Castillo Ygay showed more oomph in every degree from fruit to minerals, herbs, spice, texture and finish. Lastly the 2010 Remondo Palacios Propiedad Garnacha was a crowd favorite with deep dark black fruits, notes of tar, licorice, smoke, bitter dark chocoalte and dense spice. There is a true sense of Rioja’s deep south in this bottle of Garnacha. It is the home estate of Priorat famed Alvaro Palacio and this is a serious Garnacha coming from 90 year old vines in extremely elevated vineyard sites of Rioja Baja’s most famous and most southern town Alfaro.

Casa Rubia course 3

The final course was the most decadent Chocolate dish I have ever had- Chocolate cremoso with kumquat, hazelnut, toasted marshmallow, cardamom-cocoa crumble and coffee espuma paired with a bottle of 1983 Toro Albala Don Px Sherry Gran Reserva. Wow! The dish and the sherry were equally powerful yet wonderfully complimentary. The notes in the Sherry were nearly parallel to the dessert with cocoa, espresso and chocolate, but there were hidden notes of savory spice and smoke in the Sherry that popped out against all the chocolate and coffee.

1992 heitz trailside

Both tastings at Graileys and at Casa Rubia were a great hit! We will always host great tastings at Graileys and I plan to host more pop-up tastings at Dallas’ finest establishments! If you can’t come to Graileys for one of our tastings, catch us at a local restaurant near you!  We sealed the week with a bottle of 1992 Heitz Trailside Cabernet Sauvignon. Wow what a beautiful bottle this was! Ultra silky smooth with sweet red fruit that was soft enough to let the savory notes brilliantly shine. Gorgeous notes of dried dill, roasted coffee, sweet sage, soft leather and striking eucalyptus- this bottle was a solid close to another fantastic week at Graileys!

Strong Start for 2016!

One month down and it has already been an amazing new year. With exciting tastings behind us from Robert Foley’s annual visit to an exclusive Gaja luncheon to many more stellar bottles of true fine wines, we have been on an unremitting roll of mind-blowing wines and it’s only the second month… now this is how Graileys brings in the new year.

Boom! Look at these aged beauties...

Boom! Look at these aged beauties… From Left to Right: 1906, 1964, 1959, 1985, 1990, 1962, 1997

1906 Charmes Chambertin

Thank you Bill!!

1906 Marche Aux Vins Charmes Chambertin- BOOM!!! This is the oldest Burgundy Graileys has opened; ex-winery rebottled in 2009 and it took what goes down on a Graileys table to a whole other level (all glasses raised high to our beloved member Bill). Not a day goes by that I do not think about how I missed a chance to taste this masterpiece but from the reactions of my colleagues weeks after this tasting, this bottle must have been absolutely smashing!! From the words of my colleagues: “Just drank the oldest Burgundy in my life and it is riveting! A roller coaster of red fruits, flowers, sous bois, truffle and angel dust. Alive and profound with a two minute finish!”

1995 La Mission Haut Brion- Woah… absolute power, commanding flavors and a striking finish.

1964 Leroy Pommard Les Grands Epenots- the soft fruit, the wild earth, dirty mushrooms, deep spice. You can taste the grapes and the dirt underneath Lalou Bize’s nails and that is a very, very good thing.

1962 Suduraut

Look at that brown liquid of honey.

1962 Suduiraut Sauternes- Unbelievable! Gorgeous honey, spiced orange and kumquat preserves, sweet lemons and ginger spice. This was absolutely outstanding! Although lacking Yquem’s precision, there was still a lot of life, breath and elegance in this 54 year old Sauternes.

1961 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo

1961 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo- Unreal!! And even better the next day!! Nebbiolo shows its maximum power, it was gripping and fleshy the moment we opened it. We thought we were blown away the night we opened it, but the next day the wine really showed its core beauty; the gorgeous red fruit, dried rose and spice were released as the tannins near completely melted away.

1998 Philipponnat Clos des Gouisses- With great intensity, overripe honeydew melon, juicy apricot and honey are balanced by pure briny, deep chalk minerality with overlying layers of white flowers, salted hazelnut and the warmth of toasted sour bread and sweet brioche that softened its mineral structure. The bubbles were plump and soft leading into a very lengthy finish. Philipponnat is a favorite Champagne house for those in the know and the fully ripened Pinot Noir dominates in this tiny 5.5ha single vineyard of Mareuil sur Ay- Clos des Gouisses.

1997 Calera Mt. Harlan Viognier- this was a blinder that shocked our palates! It was beautiful, intense yellow in color with an insanely rich, yet balanced, nose of sweet lemon preserves, grilled pineapple, papaya and sweet corn. The aromatics were vibrant with dried white flowers, honeysuckle and bee’s wax, while the palate offered deeper mineral elements of crushed rocks, paraffin, meaty mushrooms, sweet herbs and marzipan. The higher acidity gave it a powerful backbone which is not commonly seen in this grape.

1961 lafite

We greeted the final weekend of the month with the rare, bold and the beautiful. We started the night with a 1961 Lafite Rothschild, not a bad start right?.  Multidimensional to the max! The fruit was still there, more red and black fruit driven with soft damp forest floor, sweet fern, leather, soft tobacco and dried rose elegantly embraced the nose while notes of soft pencil lead, toasted orange rind spice and fall leaves seamlessly glided the entire palate in an ultra silky, polished texture. The spices and minerality matured gracefully with nutmeg and dusty mocha with hints of dry clay and iron. There were no dominating elements as all the flavors melded into one amazing wine experience.

2007 Bionic Frog

What does one open after a ’61 Lafite? What about a rare bottle of 2007 Cayuse Vineyards Bionic Frog?! Boom! This was meat, bones, blood and fat to the core, covered by an impenetrable layer of sweet black fruit, crème de cassis, wild violet, lavender and raw star anise. As everything about the ’61 Lafite was elegant and soft, there was nothing soft about this rare Washington State Syrah. It was garrigue to the max but beautifully polished. Each sip launched precise explosions of insanely ripe blackberries, black pepper and olives followed by molten magma, smoke, char, ash and all that lead into at least a solid two minute finish. Uber perfumey with insane intensity as Simon calls it- “Guigal on steroids”.

1993 Harlan- the sweet dried black and blue fruit was infinite from the nose through the palate to a plunging finish with a lingering shadow. All encompassing in depth and flavors as dark minerals of deep gravel and compost, scorned tobacco and dried fern made a big impression to the seductive layers of dried rose petals, dried cherry, dark chocolate and cola spice that still held the lead. This is an ever powerful bottle with tannins still holding a demanding grip.

Barbour, SQN, Harlan

2007 Sine Qua Non Pictures Grenache- Tart and ripe bramble fruit with an insane amount of power and punch! Freshly snapped cinnamon sticks, intense Christmas spice, red and black peppercorn, licorice galore with thick layers of red plums, cherries, blackberries- and in SQN style, each flavor was demanding as the next and it didn’t get any more delicate as tar, espresso, dense wood, ripe leather and clay pounded through the sweet fruit and spice. With flavors this bold and quality this high, the super long finish was just as seductive as the palate, leaving you completely mystified and mesmerized.

2008 Colgin Cariad- Chocolate in every degree from black to white and molten to cocoa powder. Ultra creamy, velvety texture with expansive flavors and sweet ripe tannins that beautifully showcased the black cherry fruit. It was like drinking liquefied premium Luxardo cherries dipped in chocolate and coated with toasted coffee grinds and sweet cream. There is something about every single bottle of Colgin that just electrifies my palate and this ’08 Cariad did the same. Dark gravel minerality, hints of deep earth and eucalyptus balanced out the gorgeous Pritchard Hill fruit.

2013 Barbour Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon- A great premier for the killer and highly anticipated 2013 vintage, this Celia Welch and Jim Barbour collaboration is a knockout Cabernet! Ultra ripe blackberry, blueberry fruit. Blackberry pie, bramble berry, violets, plums, hints of eucalyptus, sweet plump herbs, baking spice, fresh turned soil, melted chocolate and cream, crème de cassis, rich coffee and pie!

Purple Jacket Society

Cheers to a great start at Graileys! We look forward to sharing many more great bottles of wine with you this year!

Great Friday Lineup

By: AJ McClellan

111

Great beginning to the night! The Domaine Leflaive is stunning, as usual, a little tight but still showing expressive Lemmon, limestone, quince and Asian pear.
The 1996 Pichon is again stupendous! Needing a hour to decant but once it gets there the wine showed dark dust cherry, barnyard, straw, leather, and anise. The plate is full with soft tannins he fruit is more predominate on the palate showing plum, black cherry, and violets.
The 09 Hundred Acre Ark vineyard was still tight but starting to soften around the edges. Big black fruit with some blueberries and notes of cedar and cooking spice.

From Champagne to Bordeaux, A Magical Journey

By: AJ McClellan

12342612_1500252066971924_158708444413468107_n

These two wines are just fantastic! The 1983 Cristal is almost flat but with incredible depth of character… Slaps of limestone slathered with honey and roasted quince fill the imagination when tasting this bottle. There are also some notes of toasted brioche that is lightly buttered and dusted with lemon zest. Just marvelous!

The 82 Margaux is a exemplary wine in its own right. Dusty cherry and dried cranberries accent a wreath of fall leaves that is held together by old leather straps. There are notes of clove and white pepper meshed together with pencil shavings and crushed gravel as well on the palate followed by a long smooth finish. Delicate in essence, yet powerful in flavor. This is a superb wine!
