Spottswoode In the House!

Last night, the winemaker of Spottswoode, Aron Weinkauf, dropped by for a visit and what a great time we all had! He brought in a stunning lineup from the 2014 and 2015 Sauvignon Blanc and the 2012 Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon, which went down way too easy, to a vintage showcase of Spottswoode: 2000, 2004, 2011, 2012 and 2013!

The ’00 was silky smooth and the 2004 was showing at a fantastic spot with gorgeous notes of dried plums, mocha, nutmeg, sweet cigar, and dried purple and red flowers.

2011 Spottswoode was terrific! The vintage’s signature notes were some of the most complimentary in this bottle of Spottswoode than most other Cabernets we have had of the same vintage. Rich fruit with notes of espresso, dark chocolate, gravel and dark spices. This is a stunning example of the vintage!

The 2012 and the 2013 were spectacular! The 2012 was rich, flashy and sexy while the 2013 had a touch more character to give in terms of dimensions, broader structure, depth and more textured followed by a great finish. There is no going wrong with these two vintages, both are killer Cabernets that are well worth cellar-ing if you have the control not to drink it up! You can grab the 2012 now with us for $169.95 a bottle but we will have to be more patient for the 2013’s. They will be released this fall and should be in by October. Secure the 2013 Spottswoode and pre-order yours today! You don’t want to miss out on these head-turning Cabernets! 2013 Spottswoode- $189.95/btl. Just let me know- kim@graileys.com

Palmer Steals the Show!!

It’s been a stellar week here at Graileys with many visits by winemakers and importers of some of our favorite  wines. Abreu Vineyards dropped in for a quick tasting to showcase their 2011’s followed by a favorite Bordeaux Super Second: Chateau Palmer. Palmer’s flight was sensational! We started with the wines from the younger vines, 2011 and 2012 Alter Ego and finished strong with Palmer’s 2005 and 1995. The ’05 was a baby but showed very well with overflowing flavors, power and velvety tannins; while the ’95 showed at a fantastic stage with every element from fruit, spice to earth and everything in between beautifully complimenting each other all in a seamless, silky coat that lead to a really lengthy finish. The overachiever was the 2012 Alter Ego! For the price, this “little” Palmer packs a solid punch of mouthcoating flavors that is worth well above its price!!

Palmer lineup 2016

An under the radar Cabernet that blew us away, the 2012 Signorello Estate Padrone Proprietary Red is sexy, sexy! Explosive aromatics with a multidimensional palate. It’s not just about the ripe dark fruit that’s in the glass that seduced us, which this has plenty of, it’s how all of the flavors and structure interacted together along with the texture and the finish that makes up this gorgeous wine and the ’12 Padrone has it all! Keep an eye out for this rising star in our upcoming offers!

2012 Signorello Padrone

Jacques Selosse Initial Brut Champagne- Yes, yes and yes! A spectacular Champagne that always stuns whenever it makes an appearance. Beautiful white and yellow flowers, apricots, honey, ripe melon and sweet nuts, this Champagne was perfect.

Domenico Clerico

As the days past, the stars continued to swing by Graileys and we are incredibly honored to have hosted the man, the myth, the legend: Domenico Clerico of Domenico Clerico (shrieks of excitement like a little girl!) Domenico Clerico and his winemaker Oscar Arrivabene were so generous and humble as they showcased their 2010 Barolo’s. The standout of the flight was two wines from the same Ginestre cru of Monforte but facing in different directions and with different soil compositions, one that faces east and of white clay- Ciabot Mentin and one that faces south with sandy soils- Pajana. The Pajana was my preferred Barolo, it was gripping and powerful, but it held an elegance that the Ciabot didn’t quite show. The Ciabot was the wild child from the two, broad shouldered, fleshy and ripe. Both are without a doubt, amazing bottles that belong in Italian wine lover’s collection.

2012 la dame de montrose

We were honored to welcome another Super Second for a tasting as a representative of Montrose stopped by Graileys to taste us on a fantastic flight: Montrose 2003, 2005 and 2012 and 2012 La Dame de Montrose. Much like Palmer’s 2012 Alter Ego, the 2012 La Dame de Montrose outdoes its price! This is a great bottle of Bordeaux to pop and pour any day, any time and for any palate. It was rich, ripe and smooth to please the crowd with just enough chunky gravel, earth and spice to please those who always need a little more. The Montrose lineup also showed well and ’03 Montrose was utterly bombastic! I look forward to see how it evolves in time!

Lastly, we were fortunate to host David Smith, importer of Becky Wasserman Selection, as he poured a selection of Burgundies up and coming talents. The ’13 Hubert Lamy St. Aubin Premier Cru Clos de la Chateniere was a stunning Chardonnay with brilliant acidity and ripeness. The ’12 Benjamin Leroux Bourgogne Rouge and Volnay were explosive straight from the bottle and are perfect bottles for immediate drinking pleasure. Camille Giroud’s Savigny les Beaune Premier Cru Les Peuillets and Dominique Mugneret’s Premier Cru Aux Boudots’ was also quite stunning.

And the Hits Just Keep on Coming!

Last week, after a whirlwind of spectacular Champagnes, even more stunning bottles just kept on coming our way!  Graileys had a special invitation to attend the “Perfect 10″ tasting at Grange Hall and what a spectacular lineup! From the 09 Les Chetillons Cuvee Specialle Blanc de Blancs out of Magnum to 2013 Clos de Tart  and 2012 de Montille’s Corton Charlemagne, there wasn’t a single bad bottle to be had!

April 2016 Grange Hall Tasting

My favorite bottle of the lineup was the 2009 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate. It showed beautiful fruit with power but with approachable grace! Gorgeous nose that just jumps out of the glass and the palate is a seamless continuation of the nose but with elegant layers of earth, leather and lively spice.  The texture puts the wine in overdrive and it becomes shear seduction. Beautiful now and with time, this will grow into a very fine Barolo. I can’t stop thinking about this Barolo!

2009 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate

The Big Boy of the tasting, the 2012 Colgin Cariad was the highlight of the flight. This isn’t your ordinary luscious 2012 Napa Cabernet, the 2012 Colgin Cariad has terrific balance with concentrated dark fruit, deep savory nuances of dark, rich spices and smoke. Layered, rich and enticing, it showed more than well at the tasting and I highly anticipate how it will show with more time in the bottle.  This is a bottle to make room in your cellar for!

2012 Colgin Cariad

Our members finished the week strong with a killer lineup of Bordeaux. ’00 Pichon Lalande, ’78 Ducru Beaucaillou, ’96 Carriudes de Lafite, the list goes on and one. But there were three bottles that stood out… 1990 La Conseillante, 1995 Georges Noellat Vosne Romanee Premier Cru Les Petits Monts and the 1994 Guigal Cote Rotie La Mouline…. The ’90 La Conseillante was fantastic! Plump black and blue plums intermingled beautifully with sweet cigar, black tea, leather and compost. The ’94 La Mouline was the surprise of the night! Wild berry fruit that were wonderfully preserved, dried plums, violets, rosemary and softened tar with a silky coat.  This was absolutely sexy!  The ’95 Goerges Noellat Vosne Romanee Les Petits Monts was perfect! Soft red cherry, preserved raspberries, red tea, soft spice, dried herbs and dried rose. Perfect, absolutely perfect. It was another fantastic week at Graileys! I can’t wait to see what this week will bring….

A Special Evening With Delphine Laborde of Veuve Clicquot

Another spectacular Champagne night at Graileys! Last night we hosted the lovely winemaker of Veuve Clicquot, Delphine Laborde, for our annual Veuve Clicquot Champagne Dinner and what a wonderful evening it was with good food, fabulous bubbles and great friends. As our cherished members came in for the event, we started with the NV Veuve Clicquot Brut Rose- a lot brighter in fruit and weight than previous bottlings with popping notes of strawberries, crushed raspberries and lemon with hints of rhubarb and spice. A wonderful bottle of Champagne Rose to start any evening or to pop by the pool on a lazy summer day.

Veuve Clicquot Dinner 2016 #1

We all sat down for a four course dinner prepared by one of our favorite local chefs, Top Chef Tre Wilcox, and a flight of Veuve Clicquot Champagne. From the 2004 Vintage Gold Label to the 1982 Cave privee and Roses and La Grande Dame in between, we sipped through each glass course by course while Delphine shared her thoughts on the vintages and the grapes held in each Champagne in the flight.

Veuve Clicquot Dinner 2016 #5

Veuve Clicquot Dinner 2016 #2

2004 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Gold Label- Very fresh and bright. Yellow flowers, apple blossoms and yellow apples, limestone and chalk with hints of sour dough. Good structure with active bubbles for a leaner stance in the palate.

Veuve Clicquot Dinner 2016 08 Vintage Rose

2008 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Gold Label Rose- 15% red wine from the great Grand Cru Pinot Noir village of Bouzy. Uber fresh, more so than the ’04 Brut with notes of green strawberry to just ripe strawberry and tart cranberry. Phenomenal structure, silky texture, laser-like focus and great weight! This will age beautifully for decades!! This was one of the crowd favorites, as was one of mine.

Veuve Clicquot Dinner 2016 caps

2006 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Brut- The first thing that stood out with the La Grande Dame is that the texture is explosive! While the Vintage Gold Labels offered creamy bubbles, the La Grande Dame offers that plus more. Ultra creamy, completely round texture and the flavors just coat the entire mouth with bountiful notes of white flowers, white peach, green apples and white cherry pith. Entirely from Grand Cru villages, La Grande Dame was a clear step above the Vintage Brut.

Veuve Clicquot Dinner 2016 2006 La Grande Dame Rose

2006 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Brut Rose- Even riper and fresher than the 08 Vintage Rose with juicy raspberries and ripe strawberries that dominate the nose and the palate. Limestone, cherry blossoms and bright spice play well with the fruit while notes of flint and its powerful round texture gives it that extra ‘oomph’.

Veuve Clicquot DInner 2016 1982 VCP Cave Privee

1982 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Cave Privee- Wow! It was alive and shining! Very complex with notes of overripe melon, brown pear, warm vanilla and spice. Dried herbs and dried white flowers also present with unending dimensions of savory flavors from white mushrooms, aged parmesan cheese crystals to dry sherry and smoke.

Veuve Clicquot Dinner 2016 Delphine

Winemaker of Veuve Clicquot Delphine Laborde

Delphine’s notes on the ’82 VCP Cave Privee- It was an honor to sit right next to the winemaker and I couldn’t help to ask what her thoughts were on this extraordinary wine. As we shared our tasting thoughts together she picked up flavors of candied citrus, preserved lemon, cigar and light tobacco, honey and wax with delicate notes of walnut and saffron.

2016 Show Me Yours Tasting: Bordeaux Varietal Edition

What a week! It’s been nothing short of amazing each day back to back at Grailesy! From a special birthday celebration to Leoville Poyferre vertical, then a tasting of rare bottlings of Krug and Dom Perignon to hanging out with Vernon Wells, last week was insane! But our members finished the week strong with a tremendous flight of some of the best of the best from their personal cellars through a blind tasting of You Show Me Yours and I’ll Show You Mine: Bordeaux Varietal Edition. Each bottle was very special and the only way to judge which wine comes out on top is to go through them blind. The following are my tasting notes of these spectacular bottles as I went through the flight.

4.22.2016 Show Me Trophy

Wine #1: 1990 Leoville Barton- Graileys’ Pick-  Elegant red fruit, delicate spice, red tea, tobacco, delicate earth.

Wine #2: 1982 Trotanoy- Beautiful! More texture than the first wine- velvety. Woodsy, toasty, leather, compost, forest floor, gorgeous black and blue fruit, riper wine with a killer finish.

Wine #3: 1982 Leoville Las Cases- Elegant, silky, leather, leaves, soft tobacco, black tea, tannins will lightly gripping yet it goes down silky!

Wine #4: 1989 Lynch Bages- Riper, cigar, vibrant spice, leather, powerful fruit, black and red currant, slate and dried herbs in the finish. Long finish!

Wine #5: 1998 Shafer Hillside Select- Ripe black fruit and orange zest. Dark spice, mint, ripe eucalyptus, dark minerals, gravel, rich mocha and chocolate.

Wine #6: 2000 Margaux- Powerful body and weight! Everything is ripe and rich. The finish dips in content at first but lingers with notes of ripe leather and forest floor.

Wine #7: 2002 Vieux Chateau Certan- Tarter red and black fruit. Gripping. Leather finish.

Wine #8: 2004 Corra- Rich fruit, young leather, espresso, toast, dark chocolate, dense baking spice.

4.22.2016 Show Me

The winner of this round’s Show Me Tasting… 1982 Trotanoy!! This was wine number 2 and of the entire lineup it was the wine that blew everything out of the water by miles! Even after just nosing the flight, you could already tell that wine #2 was going to be special and once it was in the palate, there was no turning back that the ’82 Trotanoy was the winner.

Champagne in the Membrane!

No one knows how to make a normal Wednesday the Best Day Ever better than our dear friend Champagne Dave. After a little winter hiatus, DC dropped by Graileys for what was to be just a glass, but in his generous nature he turned a normal Wednesday into its own spectacular event! He started with a bottle of the 2002 Krug and what a showing!! We loved this wine at the Krug dinner and was only reminded of how awesome this Champagne is when Champagne Dave opened his first bottle.

2002 krug

There is no going down after an ’02 Krug so Dave opened a bottle of the 1982 Dom Perignon P3! BOOM! Ripe and creamy with notes of caramelized pear, golden apples, Asian melon core with rich vanilla, sweet aioli, marscapone, caramel and sweet cream. The finish was toasty, minerally, just as rich and forever haunting… I can’t thank DC enough for this ridiculously awesome wine experience.

1982 DP P3

How do you top a bottle of DP ’82 P3? With a bottle of 1998 Krug Clos d’Ambonnay of course! What a rockstar Champagne!! Sheer strength, power, core minerals, ripe fruit, freshly baked sourdough loaf and brilliant purity. What a beauty!!

1998 krug d'ambonnay

After 3 back to back mind-blowing champagnes, the next Champagne had to be a different in style so we went with the 2003 Dom Perignon Jeff Koons edition Rose. The ’03 DP Rose is one of my favorite rose Champagnes. It’s seductive with gorgeous ripe berry fruit, clean minerality, great weight and mouth coating creamy bubbles. Fellow member and close friend, Ace, followed suit with a bottle of 2006 Louis Roederer Cristal- a killer Champagne that’s loud, rich and simply glorious. This is one of my favorite young Champagnes that is great for the glass now.

DP03 Rose

With all of these amazing bubbles on the table, two little Fox’s came to play and opened up two 80’s rockstars: a 1989 Veuve Clicquot Cave Privee and a 1988 Delamotte Collection Blanc de Blancs.  The ’89 Cave Privee was showing at its prime with notes of soft brioche, wild yellow field flowers, orchard fruits and warm spice while the ’88 Delamotte Collection Bland de Blancs was a fantastic gem loaded with preserved lemons, quince, soft vanilla and savory hints of truffles and lively minerality. There are not enough words to give these special bottles justice. This was truly a spectacular celebration of wonderful friends expressed through millions of creamy bubbles of remarkable Champagne.

Leoville Poyferre in the House!

Last night we showcased a stunning lineup from Bordeaux’s powerhouse Second Growth estate from St. Julien: Leoville Poyferre and what a spectacular showing! We offered four dynamic vintages: 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2010.  From the lineup the most coveted was the 2000 vintage. This was St. Julien at its finest- it showed elegance and silky finesse with seamless dimensions each loaded with gorgeous flavors of the rich, ripe and savory.

leoville tasting

2003- Dark, nearly brooding in power, aromatics of concentrated blackberry, blackcurrant and crème de cassis exploded from the glass while the palate offered an impressive balance with crushed gravel, dried herbs, espresso and rich spice.

2006- A little closed at this stage, but nonetheless a solid showing of fresh leather, saddle wood and mocha. Black currants, eucalyptus and dried herbs flashed about in staggering waves. With a few more years of evolution in the bottle, this will wake up into a prime Bordeaux.

2010- This baby needs more time but you can most definitely tell that the wine is an absolute star! Rich and wild with intense dark fruit and equally compelling mineral notes which took over the palate while dense layers of violets, dark cocoa nibs, leather and earth complimented the rich fruit.

We also poured the 2013 Almaviva Estate Red and Mamma mia Almaviva! We don’t always drink Chilean wine, but when we do… we Almaviva! Plush violets and juicy cassis explodes from the glass in thick layers of velvety goodness. Chile’s signature notes of tart herbs and red fruit were present but not dominating. The plush textures, ripe fruit and power will seduce just about any palate who loves new world reds.

1975 Mouton Rothschild

In true Graileys style, more mindboggling bottles filled the tables- some of the stunners of the night were the 1975 Mouton Rothschild, the 1996 Cos d’Estournel, 1988 Leoville Las Cases and the 1994 Dalla Valle Cabernet. The ’75 Mouton- elegant, soft red fruit, red tea and spice. The ’96 Cos- can’t go wrong with this wine, ever. ’88 Leoville Las Cases- At its perfect stage!! Gorgeous all around with the perfect amount of dried black fruit, warm spice, compost, espresso and dried red petals. ’94 Dalla Valle Cab- absolutely stunning and at a beautiful stage with soft fruit, round spice and a killer finish.

Magnum Monday Birthday Celebration!

Last night we celebrated the birthday of one of our members and a very dear friend, DDE, with spectacular magnums and birthyear bottles. We started with a bottle of 1988 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Brut Champagne and wow- it was a phenomenal Champagne! Fresh and alive with tart pear, bruised apples, rich baking spices, soft honey, warm brioche, toasty yet elegant and creamy. The La Grande Dame was followed up by a magnum of 1969 Remoissenet Chambolle Musigny, compliments from our favorite Australian. The ’69 Remoissenet Chambolle Musigny was beautiful with vibrant red cherry, crushed raspberry, cranberry preserves with gorgeous dried herbs and plenty of seductive spice.

Mags for Dr. Ellis Bday

The next bottle was one that has been on my bucket list this year: 1998 JL Chave Hermitage Blanc. What a real treat!!  Beautiful texture that coats every crevice of the palate with silky layers of complex flavors. While loaded with honeyed almonds, juicy ripe melon and white flowers right upon opening the bottle, the complexity exploded in the glass with more air. Ripe quince and kumquat, white mushrooms and wild herbs took center stage while hints of smoky minerals balanced out the ripe fruit.

1957 Rivesaltes

We finished the night with two birthyear bottles: 1957 Barbeito Boal Madeira and 1957 Prieure du Monastir del Camp Rivesaltes. The ’57 Madeira was riveting! Toffee, figs, roasted nuts, dried cherry, orange zest, cocoa, soft Christmas spices and more! This Madeira was a true head turner- elegant and beautifully layered. Deep in the Graileys’ cellar, Simon opened the 1957 Rivesaltes and it was on the opposite spectrum of the Madeira. Dense, rich, dark and brooding with powerful dark fruit, blackberry liquor, dried plums, concentrated spice, star anise, espresso beans and vanilla. What a treat in every level! Spectacular wines with unparalleled company.

Napa Collector Alert: 2012 DANA Onda Cabernet Best Price in the USA!

We just had our good friend, Master Sommelier Jason Heller, come by and pour us some of his 2012 DANA Estate “Onda” Cabernet Sauvignon and it was fantastic! I had to stop what I was doing and share this on the blog- it was that good! DANA is a top three winery in Napa to me and wine guru Philippe Melka makes these wines with extreme TLC. The Lotus Vineyard is the best known wine and one of the hardest wines to buy in the world. The estate vineyards are meticulously cared for and a majority of the wines hail high atop Howell Mountain with the 120 year old Helms Vineyard in Rutherford as the outlier. They only make about 150-200 cases of the single vineyards and they sell for $500-$800 per bottle! The remaining amazing grapes go into this wonderful bottle of Onda Cabernet Sauvignon that gets the same TLC and aging as the big boys! In the spectacular 2012 vintage this wine could truly be the best deal going on great Cult wine from Napa! The wine normally sells for $250 plus but we managed to finagle a killer deal! For only $190 per bottle I took down 3 wooden six packs of this stellar wine! Secure your OWC today!

2012 Onda

2012 DANA ONDA Cabernet Sauvignon

Graileys Price: $190 per bottle | $1140 per pack OWC

95pts Parker: The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Onda is essentially their second wine culled from the top lots of Lotus, Hershey, Helms and Crystal Springs. It’s a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot (888 cases) that spent 20 months in 70% new French oak. The wine is deep ruby/purple, exhibits crème de cassis notes with some incense and subtle charcoal. It’s medium to full-bodied, silky smooth and clearly meant to be the wine that most consumers would want to drink earlier than the more saturated and denser single-vineyard wines. This should drink nicely for at least another 10-15 years.

Let me know if you want to snag some. kim@graileys.com

Sensational Decade Old Super Second Growth Bordeaux for a Steal

We are loving this fantastic Cab blend and I am thrilled to share it with you! This 2006 Chateau Montrose is a Second Growth from St. Estephe on Bordeaux’s Left Bank and this historic property made one of the finest wines in the killer 2006 vintage. At 10 years of age, this Super Second is just opening up and the sheer quality of the wine is impossible to miss! The 2006 Montrose is loaded with currant, spice, chocolate and wild berry notes and is deep, complex and full-bodied with chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. The 2006 vintage was the inaugural year for the new owners of Montrose and they managed to earn back to back perfect 100 point scores in 2009 and 2010 . The quality of Montrose is moving up to the “Super Second” quality level with these efforts and can make wines that rival First Growths in any given year making them the smartest buys in the region. This is a must buy bottle of Bordeaux for sure!

2006 montrose

2006 Chateau Montrose St. Estephe

Graileys Price: $109 per bottle | $1260 per OWC ($105/btl!)

94+ Robert Parker: The 2006 Montrose is an undeniable success. A blend of approximately two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, one-third Merlot, and a tiny dollop of Petit Verdot, the new owner Jean Delmas produced a wine with sweet, silky tannins that are as high as those found in the great Montrose vintages of the past. The 2006 is extraordinarily elegant and finesse-styled, but it exhibits stunningly concentrated, sweet blackberry and cassis fruit with hints of flowers and minerals. Full-bodied with a savory, expansive mid-palate as well as sweet, noble tannins, this beauty will benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 20-25+ years.

This is a killer vintage of Montrose that is still under the radar given the extremely high quality level! After the much more heralded 2005 vintage, the 2006s have proven to be the best “shadow vintage” of the decade. This will blow you away anytime over the next 2 decades! Grab some while it lasts. kim@graileys.com
