Rose All Day with Chapoutier

We sent out this bright and crunchy rose over the weekend and what a huge hit!! Since we are deep in the dog days of summer, I had to post this terrific rose for everyone and anyone who hasn’t had it yet!  With these sweltering, over 100 degrees days, I promptly found the absolute best dry Rosé I could find to stock my fridge full to ride out the next 2-3 months. After tasting about 50 different wines, this new project from the famous Chapoutier family stole the show!  The 2015 Grand Ferrage Dry Rosé by Mathilde Chapoutier is fresh and racy displaying white cherry, fresh orange, red currant and strawberry aromas with purity and length. Vibrant red fruit and nectarine flavors are enlivened by sweet citrus and watermelon notes as well. This great wine sports a silky, seamless mouthfeel and leaves behind juicy pit fruit and tangerine notes. In a word: WOW! And may I have another?! We immediately bought everything we could get for the best price in the USA to offer to you! Take this chance to grab some of this rocking Rosé while supplies last- everyone will love it!

Grand Gerrage Mathilde Chapoutier rose

Graileys Price: $21.95 per bottle | $240 per case ($20/btl!)

Robert Parker 90: This is the second vintage for these Rosé releases from Mathilde Chapoutier and the 2015 Cotes de Provence Grand Ferrages Rose is a beauty. Made in stainless steel, its very light pink color is followed by classic Provencal notes of tangerine, orange blossom and citrus. Medium to light-bodied, ultra-pure, refreshing and crisp, yet still with flavor intensity, drink this outstanding Rosé on any hot summer day over the coming year.

This deeply satisfying Provencal Rosé from the Chapoutier family is flat-out awesome! I grabbed a case to beat the heat and you should too! If you would like to grab a case or two for your summer, let me know: kim@graileys.com.

Napa’s Next Rising Star: Julien Fayard

We drank a ridiculously great bottle of “value” Napa Cabernet last night that is my next Napa Jam!! For all the flavors and richness that the 2012 On Q Cabernet Sauvignon has you would expect to pay over $125 per bottle easily! These Cabernet grapes hail from the hillsides of Coombsville in the neighborhood of Pahlmeyer, Caldwell, and Meteor and were planted a decade ago. Enter new rock-star winemaker Julien Fayard! He first learned his craft at Lafite-Rothschild and Smith-Haut-Laffite in Bordeaux. Then he came to work in Napa as legendary winemaker Philippe Melka’s assistant winemaker and right hand man for 8 years! Julien has started a few small projects in the last few years that are on the cutting edge of Napa’s new generation of great winemakers. Matthew Wallace and Azur are both killer wines he makes! This 2012 On Q Cabernet blew us all away last night!  I cannot recommend this bold red more highly for you! They only made 350 cases and I got 3! Grab some while it lasts!  Kim@graileys.com

2012 On Q

2012 On Q Cabernet Sauvignon

Graileys Price: $69.95 per bottle | $839 per case

This intense and deep hillside Cabernet spends 2 1/2 years in oak and the wine is bright, rich and loaded with flavors and smells! The nose gives red roses, violets, red currant, black raspberry and blueberry with some dried tarragon, red peppercorn and pipe tobacco with air. The palate is structured, bold and complex. The myriad of red, blue and black fruits continues with exotic herbs and sweet spices on the long and supple finish. This Cab gets better and better over the course of a few hours so I would recommend opening early and often! For my money this might be the best value coming out of Napa nowadays!

This flamboyantly aromatic wine was aged in 100% new French oak.

When California Icons Collide…

A 2005 vintage comparison of Harlan Estate vs. Opus One could not be more exciting! These two powerhouse estates are practically neighbors with Martha’s Vineyard separating Harlan Estate from plots of Opus One on the western side of Oakville and to try their wines from the long growing season of 2005 was a terrific, thought and palate provoking experience!

Most aromatic- 2005 Opus One, straight from the bottle, the aromas were alive and explosive! Bright black berries, black currant and sweet baking spice jumped out of the glass while the Harlan was more reserved, more serious and grave.

On the Palate- Once again, straight from opening, the Opus One was ready to roll. Black fruits were rich, ripe and opulent; the florals were plush;  the spices were pleasingly round and sweet; and the minerals were beautifully softened. On the opposite spectrum, each flavor component in Harlan Estate was intense! From fruit and floral to spice and earth, each flavor was on high gear, nearly fighting to get the most attention. Concentrated, preserved black fruits in the Harlan with dense spices, licorice, crushed black pepper, dark chocolate, leather and chunks of gravel.

Textures and Structure- Both wines were completely mouthcoating, yet Harlan showed a much more masculine profile with gripping tannins and a sturdy backbone. It was a stunning showing last week but this baby could probably go another ten years. Even though the Opus One boasted a powerful structure, it had more of a velvety approach with ripe, sweet tannins. It can definitely go longer, but I think right now it is alive and awake, showing at the perfect spot.

Most complexity- Somewhat reserved upon opening, the ’05 Harlan took some time (4 hours) to fully express itself. But once the wine opened up, the integration of fruit to earth to spice was sophisticated and profound. This is one complex, multidimensional and very compelling bottle, with layer after layer opening and closing a new flavor to experience as it continued to blossom in the glass. Not to say that the Opus One did not have multiple layers in itself, the Opus was just more approachable with brighter flavors and textures that made it too easy to go down.

On the Finish- Both of these powerful Cabernets had great length but for me Harlan Estate’s finish was most haunting with its powerful black fruit and smoke lingering longer than the Opus. Just as its open, the Opus One finished with generous, luxurious fruit, soft leather and plush spices.

Overall, both wines are stunning Cabernets that are not to be missed!

Spanish Night at Graileys

Alas, the weekend has arrived. This week was one heck of a week with Monday starting in full force and each day since has been a strong night of terrific bottles of wines. On Tuesday, we turned to the wines of Spain with a vast lineup of stunning examples throughout the best regions of Spain. Spanish wines offer some of the most incredible values of fine wine with even a simply priced “daily drinker” showcasing magnificent complexities to more serious wines who’s longevity is as deep as any First Growths of Bordeaux and Grand Crus of Burgundy.

Spanish tasting july 2016

2015 Vina Real Rosado Rioja (not pictured) {$12.95/btl}

2013 Paco and Lola Albarino (not pictured) {$19.95/btl}

2011 Nelin Priorat Blanco (not pictured) {$56.95/btl}

2011 Monteabellon Ribera del Duero 14 Meses {$24.95/btl}

2011 Godelia Bierzo Tinto Selection {$39.95/btl}

2008 Cune Vina Real Rioja Gran Reserva RP94 ($39.95/btl)- I could probably drink this all day if I were given the chance. What a spectacular wine for the price! It took it about 2 hours for it to open up and once it did, there was so much going on in the glass! Iron, deep minerality, dried leaves and rich spices lead the palate while wild rose petals and drying red berries jumped around the tongue. Dense layers of spice adds incredible complexity with each sip… think fresh dill, rich clove, fresh cinnamon sticks, warm vanilla and red peppercorn. From those palates that gravitate towards ripe and rich to the palates that prefer the profound and earth, this Rioja CANNOT FAIL!!  This is one of the most versatile wines on the table with one of the best price to quality ratios of all of Spain.

2007 Cune Imperial Rioja Gran Reserva RP93 {$64.95/btl}

2012 Mauro {$54.95/btl}

2010 Mauro VS “Vendimia Seleccionada” {97RP and only $104.95/btl!!}-  Big, bold, highly perfumed and ridiculously complex! This modern 100% Tempranillo from the outskirts of Ribera del Duero is polished, concentrated and glorious. Juicy smashed black berries and dark ripe plums coat the palate with gripping, fleshy sweet tannins. The entire spice cabinet is condensed into each drop of this powerful wine. Even though everything from the flavors, the texture and structure of this wine is in full gear, there is a wonderful balance to this powerful Tempranillo that makes this wine truly outstanding.

2011 Alion Ribera Del Duero ($94.95/btl}

2010 Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5 Ribera del Duero {96RP- $154.95/btl}- WINE OF THE NIGHT- One of the most amazing values in the premium level of Spanish wines- there is nothing “second” about Vega Sicilia’s second label, Valbuena, this wine IS ON FIRE! Pour this beauty at any big red tasting and this powerful Spanish star will steal the show! Beautiful and majestic, This super age-worthy wine was flashy, rich and amazingly well balanced between perfectly ripe fruit, spice, earth, leather and minerals. Another wonderful wine ANY red wine lover would cherish, this is an exceptional wine that should be stocked and stashed away to enjoy its youthful beauty now and to appreciate its full glory decades later. DO NOT PASS on this ridiculously amazing Vega Sicilia.

2013 Clos Mogador Priorat {$99.95/btl}

2013 Espectacle del Montsant {$139.95/btl}- This is a single vineyard, crazy old vine (120+ years old) Garnacha from an insanely steep vineyard of Montsant. The 2012 vintage scored 99 points by Wine Advocate and the 2013 could surely score along those same lines. Dark, rich wild berry fruit with concentrated layers of deep violets, toasted, rounded spice, leather, mocha, charcoal and wild herbs that all seamlessly coat the mouth as it leads into a very lengthy finish of luxardo cherry, dark chocolate and rich spice. If you are looking for a blockbuster Garnacha, look no further.

1998 DPP2

Lately it seems like a day has not gone without a smoking bottle of Champagne on the tables and the ’98 Dom Perignon P2 is one of the week’s Champagne Stars! {Thank you Aunt Vickie…} This is showing at a perfect spot right now with a creamy, expansive texture, beautiful toasty flavors and a finish nearly as gorgeous as the wine itself. It has really blown up compared it to its release showing and now the wine has completely rounded out into a stunning Champagne!

It’s Only a Monday at Graileys

We’ve said this before and here I go again, Monday night’s are truly the greatest at Graileys! There was great energy in the Front Room with killer bottles of wine, but the company was what made the evening shine. There were stunning bottles of our Italian favorites and an unforgettable vintage reflection of the Grailey’s House Bordeaux courtesy of Dr. Richebourg. Other stars were opened as well such as the 2002 Dominique Laurent Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaumonts which is at a stunning spot right now; beautifully aromatic with wild rose petals and dried red cherries and crushed red raspberry. The palate was filled with the same red berries and rose with very well integrated notes of wild herbs, mushrooms and organic potting soil. The texture and finish was divine!

7.25.2016 Italian

What a thrilling Italian lineup- these are some of the best of their regions, non of which are less than a decade old! The ’97 Valdicava Brunello was a stunner and at nineteen years of age, it still has a great life ahead of it. The 2005 Paolo Bea Pagliaro Sagrantino was as phenomenal as animal flavors can get- rustic, powerful, dense and wild.  The bottle that stood out the most to me was the 1998 Ornellaia…. a dream bottle come true… Dense rich soil, leather and mocha lead the palate with rich dark berries intertwined profoundly in between. It was like drinking a pile of wonderfully spiced old leather, leaves and preserved wild black berry and plum.

7.25.2016 Pichon Lalande

Dr. Richebourg opened quite a lineup of Graileys’ House Bordeaux- Pichon Lalande. The ’83 was the surprise of the night, with a solid showing. There is no doubt the ’89 Pichon is absolutely fantastic and a favorite of mine, but last night, the ’75 Pichon made quite an impression! After four decades, the wine was beautiful in aromatics, the palate and its texture straight from the bottle! Ripe black fruit, dried tobacco, sweet cigar, fresh bay leaves, compost, aged leather and wonderful savory spices and herbs. Every element was absolutely perfect in this bottle and it gave us just enough time to appreciate its full glory before it fell off into Bordeaux heaven.

Other Fantastic Monday Night Bottles

Last Bottle Finishes First!

After a long week, Friday night was kicked off with a bottle of 2000 Krug Clos de Mesnil by Champagne Dave… the foreshadowing bottle of just how amazing the night will unfold. I am afraid I do not have my personal tasting notes for you on the Clos de Mesnil but my colleague’s words, the wine is absolutely magical with heavenly layers of preserved citrus and deep spice that coats the palate while it was lifted with stunning, racy minerality.  With great reason, I could stop the blog now, but the last bottle of the night could most definitely be the wine of the year….

1976 DP Vintage 7.22.2016

1976 Dom Perignon Vintage Brut Champagne- I cannot think of better flavors and textures than how this bottle of ’76 Dom Perignon showed Friday night! In it’s original deep emerald green box with its seal never been touched, we dug this pristine bottle our from the deepest depths of Johnny Eight Glass’ wine stash and what a knockout!! Deep caramel apples, baked pear, honey roasted almonds and dried red apple skin coated the tongue. Rich honeyed spices, funnel cake, toasted brioche, sweet dried herbs, yellow field flowers and densely powered limestone all followed suit in majestic layers of awesomeness. The finish was a gorgeous, complex play of sweet and savory that lingered on forever! This is one of the most memorable wines opened at Graileys and quite possibly the wine of the year…

Pichon Baron For Another Win

Last night there was another spectacular showing of Pichon Baron, this time coming from the 1990 vintage and it was divine. It was interesting to try this vintage as we had the 2000 the night before and it was still quite fresh in our minds. Both wines come from fantastic vintages, but when making the comparison, the 1990 Pichon Baron was massive! Last night’s bottle drank as a Pichon Baron could to the max nearly daunting with brooding strength, insane grip and weight. The fruit was perfectly preserved, dark and dense and the spices and minerals were beautifully deep. This was my perspective at an hour in the decanter. I could only imagine how intense the first blow was right upon opening. The ’90 and the ’00 from the night before are at two different stages in their lives, both of which are great expressions of each respecting vintage. The opulent ’00- alive, more giving and ready to roll and the powerful ’90- more intense and grave. There is no doubt that both wines will live on to have profound lives decades from now but it was truly extraordinary to have experienced these vintages so closely in tasting range. Will there be another Pichon Baron to dominate the tables tonight and take the week’s win…? Who knows what tonight will unfold, but within the Graileys’ walls I am sure the ’00 and 1990 Pichon Baron will have great challengers to face by the night’s end.

A Little Unsuspected Night at Graileys

In the heat of July while the front room is slow, this is the time we brokers stagger our vacations. Today is the first day all brokers, including our fearless leader Simon Roberts, are back at it in the Graileys office! This is what happens when our beloved members, the Graileys’ Team collide and the dog days of summer collide…

2009 ramonet montrachet

BOOM!! We are “back in the grind” with this insane wine- 2009 Ramonet Montrachet- and it is so !@#(*%^@!#@! GOOD! Intense, ripe and gorgeously dense yet with superlative balance and purity of fruit. The flavors just stick on the palate with plump, sweet herbs and juicy ripe fruit balanced with notes of chunky chalk that creates a sensation on the palate that is mindboggling in itself.

Simon opened up a bottle of the 2000 Pichon Baron and it is a beautiful state right now! Rich, dried black and red berries seamlessly intertwined with aged leather, dense forest floor and dried tobacco. The ’00 Pichon Baron has woken up nicely. This is one of the best showings of ’00 Pichon Baron we have had yet!

1994 Meo Camuzet Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Aux Brulees- was a nice surprise. I have been intrigued on how this wine would show given its incredibly challenging vintage (to say with the kindest regards), but if anyone can do it, Meo can! It showed a strong fruit attack straight from the bottle but the mid-palate didn’t quite match up. After about thirty minutes, the fruit mellowed out and the mineral and earth notes took the stage with notes of dehydrated dirty mushrooms, clay pots and dried herbs. The finish was a little more meaty, earth driven and lengthier than I expected.

2012 Futo OV|SL- Always a happy time when Futo is opened! The OV|SL is a mouthcoating Cabernet loaded with gorgeous fruit and toasty spice. You really can’t go wrong with this bottle.

7.20.2016

And then Dr. Richebourg just walks in… I see a ’66 Pichon Lalande and a ’95 Pichon Lalande in my near future…

Gruner Veltliner Wows Us All!

I would never think I would have Gruner Veltliner as a title on a Graileys Blog… As much as we love our Bordeaux, Burgundy and California Cabernet, the bottles we have opened this week have been somewhat outside of our norm… In these dog days of summer, we have been enjoying spectacular, crunchy, refreshing white wines from Grand Cru Chablis to alpine boutique Italian Chardonnay and all the Sancerre you can dream of. But the white wine that has stood out to me all week is the mineraly, herbal, super fresh and clean Gruner Vetliners from Austria! The 2014 Brundlmayer Gruner Veltliner Ried Lamm completely refreshes and quenches the palate with white peach, sweet lemons and limes, with funky hints of white pepper, fresh scallions, jicama and crushed river rocks. The 2013 Schloss Gobelsburg Tradition Gruver Veltliner has been a huge hit with our members as well! With a weightier palate, riper fruit and rounded spice, Schloss Gobelsburg is an Austrian icon that belongs in everyone’s glass this summer!

We also opened a bottle of 1999 Cinq Cepages and a bottle of 2001 Vall Llach! What a treat!! The ’99 Cinq Cepages was very reminiscent of Right Bank Bordeaux  with plush texture and elegance. The fruit was soft while the cigar, leather and spice were beautiful and sweet. The finish lingers for what seems like forever, which was A-okay with me. The ‘01 Vall Llach was very interesting to try. We’ve had the stellar 2004 vintage not too long ago so it was really fascinating to have the 2001 vintage in comparison. It had the signature abundant, rich, dark and rustic flavors of Priorat that all stuck on the mid-palate but the lead into the finish was somewhat disjointed. The finish was a dancing shadow of crushed gravel, dusty lavender and violets and dried concentrated black fruit.

7.13.2016

These scorching days of summer have not slowed us down here at Graileys and tonight we will finish the week strong with a bottle of 1997 Araujo Eisele Vineyard Cabernet, 2010 Sine Qua Non Five Shooter Grenache, 2005 Harlan The Maiden and much much more!
