After a long week, Friday night was kicked off with a bottle of 2000 Krug Clos de Mesnil by Champagne Dave… the foreshadowing bottle of just how amazing the night will unfold. I am afraid I do not have my personal tasting notes for you on the Clos de Mesnil but my colleague’s words, the wine is absolutely magical with heavenly layers of preserved citrus and deep spice that coats the palate while it was lifted with stunning, racy minerality. With great reason, I could stop the blog now, but the last bottle of the night could most definitely be the wine of the year….
1976 Dom Perignon Vintage Brut Champagne- I cannot think of better flavors and textures than how this bottle of ’76 Dom Perignon showed Friday night! In it’s original deep emerald green box with its seal never been touched, we dug this pristine bottle our from the deepest depths of Johnny Eight Glass’ wine stash and what a knockout!! Deep caramel apples, baked pear, honey roasted almonds and dried red apple skin coated the tongue. Rich honeyed spices, funnel cake, toasted brioche, sweet dried herbs, yellow field flowers and densely powered limestone all followed suit in majestic layers of awesomeness. The finish was a gorgeous, complex play of sweet and savory that lingered on forever! This is one of the most memorable wines opened at Graileys and quite possibly the wine of the year…
