A Few Good Bottles.

By: AJ McClellan

We had a rather restrained night at Graileys yesterday. Even with only a few members in there were still some excellent bottles of wine opened up. One of my favorites was the Gaja Gromis which was very impressive after some time in the glass.

1990 Gaja Gromis Conteisa Cerequio Barolo – A lovely bottle of wine. Big tobacco, dried flowers, orange zest, and sour dusty cherry on the nose. The palate was soft and light on the palate with well structured tannins that melt in the mouth. The finish was lively with a lingering minerality and great acidity.

1992 Bollinger Grand Anne – Very biscuit on the nose and palate with huge sourdough bread, quince, apricot, and Asian pear. A Nice bottle of wine but very oxidative in style.

1996 Hudelot Noellat Clos Vougeot – I am a big fan of Hudelot as a producer, all the wines I have had from him have been consistent and high in quality. The 96 Clos Vougeot was drinking beautifully with dry red cherries, crisp acidity, and a great mineral finish.

2006 Damilano Cannubi Barolo – An impressive Barolo. This single vineyard wine was dark and very concentrated showing big plum notes with pipe tobacco, brazed duck with soy sauce, and old leather. The tannins were still hard but after a few years in the bottle that should loosen up.

A Few Good Cabs..

By: AJ McClellan

A few fun bottles of wine opened last night. The Bryant was one of the better wines I have had all week showing a great complex nose and palate as well as a long smooth finish….

1994 Bryant Cabernet – Bryant never fails to impress. However, the 94 is especially exciting with soft red fruit notes and lovely tobacco nuances backed by velvety tannins. I gave this bottle almost four hours in the glass before I managed to finish it off. The wine continued to evolve gaining a floral note and some spice on the finish.

2008 Cinq Cepages – While the Cinq Cepages could not quite compare to the Bryant it was still drinking consistently well with soft black fruit and well developed tannins.

Mouton, Leflaive, Grange, Pichon, La Chapelle… Just a Thursday Night at Graileys.

By: AJ McClellan

An unexpected Thursday with a great group of members opening some splendid wines! The night started with an exceptional lineup of 90 Pol Roger Rose, 91 Leflaive, and 96 La Chapelle. On most nights there would be nowhere to go from there but last night the members found a way to surpass the wonderful wines that were already on the table and open some absolutely wonderful bottles!

1990 Pol Roger Rose – This wine was good upon opening but after some time in the glass it became amazing! Very floral on the nose and palate with blooming red roses and stunning fresh baby strawberry patch. Some light yeist notes. Rocking finish.

1991 Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet – This bottle of Leflaive was drinking much better than the last one we had. All the classic notes of Chevalier that I love. Toasty popcorn, quince, Asian pear, big lean minerality, and a classic floral finish.

2005 Remonet Chassagne Montrachet 1er Morgeot – This bottle was a little pre-moxy with honeyed characteristics on a very young wine. There was still some good tropical fruit and a pleasant minerality on the finish.

1976 Grange – This was an interesting bottle. It might have been corked, dead on the nose and palate with very earthy notes and faded fruit notes.

2001 Grange – Big vibrant Grange with classic cut grass and huge black fruits that is indicative of Grange.

1996 La Chapelle – The La Chapelle is stunning. Great smoke notes with tar, leather, plum, and anise.

1969 Remoissenet Clos Vougeot – Soft and elegant as always. This bottle was drinking very well with all the elegance that we have come to expect from the 69 Remoissenet wines.

1989 Leoville Barton – Classic Bordeaux with earthy notes of forest floor and tilled earth. Big spicebox and dried red/black cherries.

2003 Mouton – I quadruple decanted this wine and it was still massive but defiantly drinkable. Like a young Harlan there was big blue and black fruits with heavy smoke and a subtle earthy note in the back ground.

2003 Pichon Lalande – Drinking well with hard tannins and a earthy finish.

2003 Pichon Baron – Almost as good as the Lalande but bigger and more extracted.

1988 Remoissenet Clos Vougeot Magnum – Still elegant but with slightly harder tannins than the 69.

2006 Nobel One Half Bottle – I can say that this was the most pleasant surprise of the night. A wonderful bottle of desert wine from Australia with huge honey and caramel notes that would rival some of the great Sauternes of France.

Vacation in a Bottle…

By: LA Perkel

Have you seen that offer from Groupon (http://www.groupon.com/deals/ga-m-deep-ocean-expeditions) to tour the Titanic shipwreck on a deep-ocean vessel? Well, if you weren’t quick enough with your $12,500 to get in on the action, do not despair. Stop by Graileys and drown yourself in a 6L bottle of 1998 Chateau Lafite Rothschild. We have it for $13,000, but I’m sure Simon could be easily persuaded to give it up for $12,500. After all, it’s against Graileys regulation to let you be disappointed twice in a week.

Robert Parker, who gave the wine a 98, says: “This opaque purple-colored 1998 is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smoky, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. The wine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite’s character. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layered yet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccably balanced and long (50+ seconds).

White Burg and Red Rhone

By: AJ McClellan

Last night was a bit slower in Graileys, only two bottles were opened, but boy were they two good bottles!

1991 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet – This was an interesting bottle of wine. The nose was honeyed with subtle notes of almond extract, limestone, honeysuckle, quince, and yellow pear. On the palate the wine was slightly lacking in acidity and I had the feeling that it was a little over oxidized for the age of the wine. I was very impressed with the length of the finish as it lasted for a good 45+ seconds.

1996 Jaboulet La Chapelle – I was very impressed with this bottle of La Chapelle. With big earth notes leading into baked plum pie and smoking tobacco I was loving every sip of this bottle. Given a few hours in the decanter the wine expanded even more gaining floral notes of red roses and violets as well as notes of baking spice. The earthy tones softened and finished strong on the back end. A great bottle of wine now although with sometime in the bottle this is going to be impressive indeed!

A Quite Monday, or Was it?

By: AJ McClellan

Mondays at Graileys are always exciting, you never know who or what will walk in the door. With Simon out of town we expected a slower day but were happy to see a few of our favorite members walk in the door for a few glasses before dinner.

1989 Clinet – One of my favorite bottles of Bordeaux. The Clinet was drinking with dark fruit notes up front and a load of damp earth on the back. Huge black liquorish, forest floor, wet tobacco, and cracked leather showed on the nose and palate of the wine.

1991 Gaja Sperss – This bottle started slow but ramped up quickly after a few hours in the glass. Big earth with a little red fruit on the edge that then moved into old leather shoe and big cooking spice on the back end.

1952 Remoissenet Clos Vougeot – This wine is always drinking well. Bright red cherries and raspberries on the nose than then turned into big barnyard funk and substantial spice notes. This wine has a slight iron note on the finish that was a little off putting for me but all in all the wine was very good.

2009 Pierre Henri Morel CDP – This is a great bang for the buck wine showing some pleasant earth notes in a young wine and plenty of black and red fruits.

2008 Hudson Syrah – One of the more unique Syrahs that I have tasted recently. This wine is very consistent giving off a nose of crushed strawberries covered with a fine mist of black pepper. The palate has a softer feel, not the huge monster that most Napa Syrahs are but a little softer. Well integrated tannins and a long finish make this a great bottle of wine in my book…

2010 Ulacia Txakolin  – This is just a fun bottle of wine. A nose straight off the beach showing sea salt and ocean water with brine and crushed oyster shells. The palate has less moister than chalk and a searing acidity that somehow pulls the wine together and makes it work. This is a wine that you will either love or hate and I absolutely love it!

2007 La Nerthe CDP Blanc – This wine was a bit of a disappointment. The wine showed some stone fruit and fruit loops but with little acidity making it feel flabby and out of balance. This is a primary example of what can go wrong with a CDP Blanc….

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tasting with Harry Karis!

By: AJ McClellan

We had a great tasting Friday night with Harry Karis author of “The Chateauneuf du Pape Wine Book”. The tasting was very educational for me as I have not had a lot of older CDP wines. When I first opened the bottles I was surprised to find that they all smelt like they were cooked. Each wine was full of roasted notes with a load of brett and very unattractive earthy aromas. After three hours in the bottle the wines opened up losing much of the roasted/brett notes but it was still prevalent on many of the wines…

1985 Janasse white – Very nutty on the nose and palate with honey notes and a fat body that does not have quite enough acidity to be in balance.

1959 Patris – Immediately on the nose big notes of compost, earth, and tar. After being allowed to open up some the wine took on dark spice notes with stewed plums. This was a very interesting wine because it changed several times in the glass. I don’t know if I can say that I liked it a lot but it was defiantly interesting…

1964 Mont-Redon – Surprisingly fresh with sour cherry, leather, cigar smoke, star anise, burnt rubber, dark moist soil, and dry cedar on the nose. This was one of my favorite wines of the tasting.

1969 Fortia – Very vegetal on the nose and palate with freshly cut grass and big asparagus notes. The wine was very brash assaulting the senses with black tar, mossy log, and cooked black fruits.

1969 Delas Freres – This CDP was very smokey right out of the gate with big spice notes and a forest full of wood notes. There was a smell that reminded me of moth balls on the finish and a sliver of black plums and cherries hiding behind all the earth and wood notes.

1970 Mont-Redon – This was the other favorite of the tasting. Pleasant notes of dried red fruit on the nose melting into a gravely minerality on the palate with a warm forest floor finish.  There were also notes of dried cracked leather and black pepper.

1973 Cave Saint Pierre Reserve – Stewed red fruits with moldy leather straps and dust covered raspberries. Very faded on the back end with little to no finish.

1979 Cabrieres – Big matchstick on the nose followed by burnt hay and dried black fruits. The tannins were still hard on this wine making it a little out of balance.

1979 Fortia – when I first opened the wines this one was my favorite but as all the wines opened up this wine did not do as well as I thought it would. There was some concern of TCA on this wine, I cannot tell whether or not the wine was afflicted with cork but I can say that I still enjoyed the wine. Roasted strawberries and cherries with some notes of game and subtle forest floor with tilled earth. The palate showed barnyard notes with hay bale and a long tobacco finish.

1981 Janasse – This wine was full of funk, and not the kind that makes you want to dance… the first thing that hits you is the massive note of fresh cow patty followed by leathery tannins and big iron on the finish.

1986 Lucien Barrot – Back to soft tannins with crushed red fruits, liquorish, wet pipe tobacco, and animal pelt on the back end.

1989 Banneret – With a little less age on the wine the funk has taken a backseat to the fruit and spice of the wine. Still some barnyard on the palate with sandalwood, cigar, and a woody finish.

1990 Chante Cigale – Big ripe fruit with tobacco, white pepper, red roses, and clove notes.

A Few Bottles Around the Table

By: AJ McClellan

We had a small but good group around the table last night. Everyone popped a bottle or two and shared it around. The Barbour was a huge hit as well as the Eyrins and Capture…

2006 Pirouette Cabernet Sauvignon – It has been about six months since I last tasted this wine. The wine was drinking very well. Dark fruit with gritty tannins and a pleasant finish.

2000 Monbousquet – I thought the Monbousquet was drinking very well. Classic notes of burnt coffee, roasted plums, and compost.

2008 Cinq Cepages – As I said yesterday, this is becoming one of my new favorite wines, expect to see this bottle in the lineup for the next few weeks…

2009 Capture Harmonie – Every time I taste this wine it impresses me. Soft tannins with great fruit and seamless balance.

2009 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon – A nice bottle of Cabernet showing great black and red fruit notes followed by big spice box on the finish.

1997 Etude Cabernet Sauvignon – A bright nose of Bing cherry and vanilla followed by milk chocolate and a hint of rose petal.

2009 Chateau des Eyrins – While the Cinq Cepages is fast becoming a go to Cali Cab this Eyrins is quickly becoming my go to Bordeaux. I was very impressed with I tasted this wine from the barrel last year in Bordeaux, it has become exponentially better since then. Look for this bottle to be a hidden gem in the years to come…

2007 Barbour Cabernet Sauvignon – Around the table this wine was a smash hit! Big black fruit notes with stunning spice and tobacco notes on the finish. A great bottle of wine for Cali Cab lovers.

Quite the Spread

By: AJ McClellan

Wednesday was a good day at Graileys. A plethora of wines were opened, all of outstanding quality. My wine of the evening was by far and away the d’Auvenay. With the beautiful toasty notes and rocking minerality I could drink that wine all day long and never get tired of it…

2000 Pichon Baron – A great bottle of wine, classic Bordeaux, with dusty tannins and great warm earth notes. The fruit is still ripe and showing well. This wine is great now and will drink for another two decades at least.

1999 Poggio Antico Brunello Riserva – I tasted this wine when it was first opened and it was rather muted. Some sour cherry on the nose and hard tannins on the palate. I was told that after some time in the glass the wine improved significantly.

2007 Napanook – Good old Napanook. This is a classic Cali Cab. Big fruit, big spice, big tannins.

2007 Jones Family – Every time I try this bottle I am very impressed. Dam Bailey would be proud to hear that this wine stood up with everything else we had on the table last night.

2008 Cinq Cepages – This wine is becoming my new favorite Cali Cab. Soft ripe fruit with pronounced silky tannins and a alcohol that is in perfect balance with the wine.

1985 Ridge York Creek Zinfandel – Drinking great on the pop and pour but after some time in the glass this wine fell off substantially.

1992 Ridge Lytton Springs Zinfandel – This wine was good, I thought it was showing some slight stewy notes at first but after some time with the glass I think that is just how this older Zinfandel was showing. Light on the palate with some soft red fruit notes.

1996 Sauzet Batard Montrachet – Showing a little more oxidization that I thought appropriate for a 96 but still drinking well. Apricot, almond extract, honeysuckle, and a pleasant toasty note.

1998 Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet Clavoillon – This wine was showing some oxidized notes as well but not as bad as the Sauzet. Pear and quince with a pleasant limestone minerality and slight honey notes.

1998 Domaine d’Auvenay Lalou Bize Leroy Meursault Les Narvaux – This wine is friggin awesome! When you put the glass to your nose you get toast, honey nut cheerios, Asian Pear, and chalky minerality. A beautiful bottle of wine!

2006 Mas Boislauzon Quet CDP – I did not get to taste this wine but I am told is was drinking well but very young.

2006 Reserve Des Deux Frères CDP – This wine smelt like the north end of a south bound camel….

Highlights from Tuesday Night

By: AJ McClellan

Last night was a good one at Graileys with a truck load of wines opened around the table. Below are a few highlights of the night.

NV Gonet Medeville Rose – A great bottle of Rose that we have had many times. The new release is very nice with pleasant strawberries and cream notes.

2009 Gonet Medeville Chateau Eyrins – I was very impressed with this wine. Great dark fruit with balanced earth notes and surprisingly soft tannins.

1995 Pichon Lalande – Pichon is always a great bottle of wine. The 95 is in a good drinking window with soft tannins and good fruit. I would not age this wine for more than 5 years…

2007 Shafer Hillside Select – A monster wine that needed three hours of decanting before it was ready to drink. Big black fruits with huge spicy notes.

2008 Cing Cepages – I was very impressed with this wine. The fruit is big and bold with balanced tannins and a lengthy finish. A vast improvement over the 07 vintage and a bottle that I would stock up on as I think it will get much better.

2003 Pape Clement – We have had this bottle several times and it never fails to impress. Great earth and the fruit is still ripe, my wine of the night.

2009 Evening Land Summum Pinot Noir – This bottle is a gooden with a big nose of smoke and black cherries and a smooth palate of freshly picked fruit and great minerality. This is a great bottle of wine with tons of potential.

2004 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese – An outstanding bottle of wine. I could drink this all day by the pool… Crisp fruit notes of pear and green apple followed by a slight petrol note. Off dry on the palate with great balance.
