Napa’s Next Cult Debut

Tod Mostero, winemaker of Dominus and Ulysses, launches Napa’s next cult cab with us at Graileys! Tod was super gracious as he introduced us to his next venture with Bordeaux’ super star Christian Moueix and Dominus. The Ulysses Vineyard is a beautiful property in southwest Oakville that lies just south of the world famous To Kalon Vineyard and Martha’s Vineyard. Christian noticed this “sweet spot” plot and purchased the property back in 2008. With only 800 cases, the praised 2012 vintage is the first commercial release and what a spectacular debut! Check out our tasting below as are proud and excited to introduce you to Napa’s legend in the making! We also tasted through Moueix’ Right Bank properties of the 2011 drinking vintage to highlight the well loved wines of Christian Moueix.

Tod Mostero- Ulysses and Dominus 2016

Tod Mostero of Dominus and Ulysses tasting with AJ and our members.

2012 Ulysses Cabernet- This beauty tastes like a mythical blend of Dominus and Mouton! It took some time to open up, but after a solid decant, the wine explodes from the glass with sensual and alluring wild flowers, ripe raspberries, cocoa and exotic spices. The palate is full of sweet red and black cherries, cassis, raspberry jam, roses, cedar, coffee bean and minerals. The palate is so supple and sexy that it’s hard to stop drinking! This multi-layered Cab shows striking depth and complexity on the extremely long finish.

2013 Ulysses Cabernet- Not yet released (will be released in March 2017), it was fascinating to try the 2012 and the ’13 side by side! Such a dynamic difference between these two spectacular vintages! The 2012 was ripping with ripe flavors while the ’13 was the more serious Cabernet, beautifully reserved and extraordinarily complex. The ’12 has so much to offer and it does almost straight away, but there were so many other elements going on in the bottle of ’13 Ulysses that wouldn’t ever be in the ’12 and I am totally happy to have both vintages. Both are smoking examples of their vintages and I can’t wait to revisit the 2013 after more time in the bottle and for it’s official release.

Tod Mostero- Ulysses and Dominus 2016 .2

A Stunning Showcase of Christian Moueix!

2011 Belaire Monange, St. Emilion- Earth driven with wild herbs, forest floor, violets and lavender followed by wild blueberry, black mulberry fruit and spice. It started off really strong with earth but with some air, the earth elements simmered down and the fruit shown through in a mouthcoating, lingering showing.

2011 Esperance de Trotanoy, Pomerol- This was our favorite straight from the bottle! Ripe and silky- it was a perfect balance of fruit, earth, spice and everything in between. A perfect bottle to open for any occasion and quite impressive from start to finish. This is a great bottle of youthful Bordeaux to impress just about any palate.

2011 Chateau Trotanoy, Pomerol- Powerful and gripping, this was the wine I cherished in my glass at the end of the night. The 1982 Trotanoy was the winner of our “You Show Me Yours, I’ll Show You Mine- Bordeaux Varietals” tasting a few months back and although not that quite of an epic vintage, this bottle of 2011 was impressive in its own right. Dense black currants and black plums soared through the palate with equally powerful notes of compacted spices, wild lavender, rich leather, earth and minerals. Each sip is quite fulfilling and the finish is daunting. This was a wonderful Bordeaux to cap the night.

2012 Ulysses

DO NOT PASS ON THIS FANTASTIC DEBUT!

 2012 Ulysses Cabernet Sauvignon

Graileys Price: $169.95 per bottle | $1019.70 per 6 pack OWC

“The 2012 Ulysses (800 cases) is 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest other Bordeaux varietals. A structured, dense purple wine that displays plenty of cedar wood, crème de cassis, licorice and graphite, the wine is full-bodied, rich, backward and dense, but beautifully pure fruit and an almost Pontet-Canet-like purity and density are hallmarks of this brilliant wine. Forget it for 4-5 years and drink it over the following 20-25.” – Robert Parker

06 Elizabeth Salmon Rose Steals the Show!

Last week we had a stunning lineup of Billecart Salmon Champagne. These wines are some of our house favorites, especially the well celebrated Elizabeth Salmon rose! Even their Non-Vintage Rose is a beautiful Champagne that I could appreciate in my glass all summer long! Check out our tasting and as always, if there is anything you would like for your own cellar, don’t hesitate to ask!  CHEERS! kim@graileys.com

Billecart Salmon tasting 2016

2004 Billecart Salmon Blanc de Blanc- There is lots going on in this powerful Champagne. What a great start to the night! Vibrant minerals laced with crunchy green apples, fresh pears and white flowers with wonderful smokey notes locked within.

1999 Billecart-Salmon Cuvee Nicolas Francois- Silky and aromatic with seamless flavors of toasted pastry and almonds. The bright fruit and minerals are all very complimentary in its tiny, creamy bubbles.

2002 Billecart Salmon Cuvee Nicolas Francois- One of my personal favorites from the lineup! Ultra creamy bubbles with lively aromatics and the flavors and structure focused and thrilling! This bottle has everything I love in great Champagne. Toasty brioche, lemon zest, white peach, crushed chalk, sweet cream and roasted nuts. This is a beautiful Champagne you want to cellar!

2006 Billecart Salmon Cuvee Elizabeth Salmon Rose- The ’06 Elizabeth Salmon Rose stole the show! This is a gorgeous rose filled with bright strawberry and crushed red cherry fruit that lingered on and on! The minerals are fantastic and the finish is haunting! This Rose Champagne is on fire!

1999 Billecart Salmon Cuvee Clos St. Hilaire- I didn’t get a chance to try this rare Champagne but from what the members and my colleague says, it was quite stunning! Wonderfully complex and quite dynamic with deep spice and savory components. From the reactions of the members attending the tasting, it seemed like this was showing at it’s prime but has a great life ahead of it as well!

A Baller Flight for a Baller Flight!

Forget first class and leave your American Airlines card at home folks because this is a whole different level of ranking up the air miles. Yesterday I prepared a smoking flight of very special wines for a very important flight for our beloved members. As a Graileys’ Member, there is no better way to fly than with these bad boys… This will be one spectacular flight… and trip too! For this well-due momentous occasion for our members, only the finest bottles can do. Cheers our members’ next chapter and a Graileys’ Grand Cru flight at 36,000 ft!

5.25.2016 Colin Flight Flight

2012 Claude Dugat Grand Cru Charmes Chambertin- A glorious Grand Cru Babe! Beautiful precision yet the flavors are deeply concentrated, wild strawberries, crushed red cherries loaded with bright spices, cinnamon, red tea and fresh bay leaves. Crushed limestone and rose petals wonderfully compliment the fruit. The texture is powerful yet it goes down like silk, leading into a gorgeous long finish.

2005 SQN Atlantis Fe2O3-1b Syrah- 100 Pointer Knockout! Holy Smokes! Every drop was mind and palate blowing! Dense black and purple fruit, powerful flavors dominate the palate with deep layers of slate, granite, licorice and charcoal. Smoke lingers while wild violets, olives and rich spice race up and down the tongue. This bottle was absolutely insane!

2012 Lokoya Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon- This was a spectacular revisit of another 100 Pointer Knockout! We first had this amazing bottle about ten months ago and last night’s showing has broadened out nicely. A little more aromatic than before as the nose exploded right out of the bottle while I was decanting it. One of Napa’s epitome of luxurious Cabernet with gorgeous black currant and creme de cassis; this is as sexy as Napa can get.

2003 Dom Perignon  Brut Rose Champagne- I did not pre-open the Champagnes but this is always a favorite Rose Champagne, the ’03 DP Rose is open, fleshy and ready to roll. It carries bright red fruits with hints of cream and a spectacular minerality  that gives the ’03 DP Rose it’s powerful backbone. The flavors stick to the tongue all day! Each creamy bubble is loaded with rich flavors that will blow anyone away!

NV Jacques Selosse La Corte Faron Grand Cru Extra Brut Champagne- …a dreaming sigh…

2013 Corra Cabernet Sauvignon- Now this is one demanding Cabernet! Rich in flavors with a powerful grip! I would like for it to have a couple of more years in the bottle for its flesh to round out, but it shows everything a Cabernet lover would want in a single bottle and more! Wild violets, blackberries, black currants and licorice with a rich layer of vanilla bean and nutmeg. There’s an underlying layer of gravel that I love and the finish is everlasting! Can’t wait to revisit this one a year or two out!

Heavy Case of the Mondays

When I first joined Graileys, Simon told me this place is crazy…  He wasn’t kidding…  A heavy case of the Mondays hit us at Graileys and what I mean by heavy case is a case of the newest release of Domaine de la Romanee Conti! BOOM!  Most will agree that Monday’s are the worst days of the week and typically I could understand why. But not at Graileys my friend…

DRC Drop Off

When The Chairman, Purple Jacket Bill and two Doctors sit down together at one table, you know your Monday will kick just about anybody’s Friday to the curb. The night started strong and ended strong, there wasn’t a bad bottle to be had. We started with a bottle of the 2005 Bernard Fauri Hermitage and straight from the bottle it was lively in aromatics and held great charm as all of its former edges smoothed over. Still very meaty and filled with dried herbs, dried violets, licorice and black pepper; but very graceful indeed.

5.23.2016

1961 Vouvray- We have had at least four bottles of this wine now and this bottle is by far the most impressive bottle yet! Completely electrifying!!! Impeccably fresh, insanely clear and light in the glass whereas the other bottles have been appropriately golden in color. Dried green pears, apricot pith, white peach fuzz and white cherry pith shocked the palate. Hints of soft hay, freshly cut wool, almond skin and sheep’s milk cheese gave it more dimension and the finish was just as riveting as the palate.

1981 Haut Brion- Wasn’t immediately impressed when we opened the bottle but after it rested in the glass, it really blossomed into the signature flavors and textures that I love in Haut Brion!

2012 AF Gros Richebourg- One of my favorite Burgundies of 2012, this bottle never fails to impress. Bold rich flavors, bright fruit, supple and sexy!

5.23.2016 DRC Corton 2013

2013 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Corton- With a fresh case of DRC in the cellar, it didn’t take long for us to open a bottle and the ’13 Corton blew us away!! When it first hit the glass it had it’s edges; but after some time with air, the nose opened up, the flavors expanded and the texture turned into beautiful red cherry silk.

A spectacular memory was created last night by some of our most beloved members. Mondays’ truly are the greatest days of the week…

You Show Me Yours, I’ll Show You Mine- Blanc!

Last Friday some of our members got together for a grand blind tasting in a Show Me show down white wine edition. With no regional limitations and no varietal restrictions, our beloved members brought in some of their finest white wines from the deepest parts of their cellar. We had eleven stunning wines in the lineup but there can only be one winner and not all showed to the top of their game.

The flight was large so I broke it down in three’s for an easier tasting and comparison. From the first three wines, my favorite was wine #2: rich flavors, gorgeous minerals, beautifully complex with a stunning finish. Caramelized pear, golden apples, sharp cheese, wax, honey comb, dried wild herbs, yellow flowers and preserved Meyer lemon.

The next set of three, wine #5 stood out to me the most being the least offensive of the set. #4 was overly oxidized to the point it was taken out of the lineup and #6 just wasn’t my personal style. #5 showed a lot more elegance, cleaner minerality and brighter fruit.

I thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed the last leg of the lineup: wines #7-11. Wines #8 and #9 showed very well. #8 was the hidden gem in the flight. The wine was one of our favorite grower Champagnes decanted until the bubbles settled out. But that didn’t fool our members, some of our best blind tasters had notes that depicted a top notch Champagne or Sparkling wine claiming it tasted like an aged Nyetimber that’s been in the glass a little too long. Wine #9 was one of my favorites in the entire lineup with beautiful notes of honeysuckle, white cherry pith, ripe apricots, peach, lime and flint. Powerful white wine that has the capability to shine for a lifetime.

Wines #10 and #11 were also my favorites of the lineup. Perhaps it was the shear power and refreshing minerality or the electrifying intensity and every in these last two wines that were not nearly as present in the wines before them. In these last two glasses, there was lime galore from lime blossoms and lime zest to lime candy and everything in between. Chalk was the mineral backbone that gave these wines its amazing structure and life. What a fantastic evening with great wines and even better company.  We couldn’t have hosted such a wonderful tasting without our valued members’ enthusiasm for fine wines like these.

Last Night’s Heavy Hitters

Another strong night at Graileys! Dominique Laurent dominated the table! The ’00 Dominique Laurent Beaune 1er Cru VV was smoking and the ’11 SQN Patine Syrah couldn’t have been on a more opposite spectrum but it was a close second! While the ’00 Laurent was all about elegance and seamless in nature, the ’11 SQN was demanding with rich flavors and textures. Both phenomenal bottles of wine! The 1989 Veuve Clicquot Cave Privee was beautiful as always with its rich, warm toasty flavors and lengthy finish.

The ’76 Cos d’Estournel was on point straight from the bottle but it fell off relatively quickly, especially for those who kept it longer in the glass. The ’89 Cos on the other hand took about a solid hour for it to fully express its rich characteristics. After it opened up, it was one of the stars of the night!

We had a chance to open a bottle of the 2009 Second Flight it is still a baby- loaded with primary fruit and expensive oak. Decadent nose of creme de cassis and black cherry pie filling lead the palate with definite oak notes of coffee beans, cocoa and sweet supple tannins.

1989 Tertre Roteboeuf- showed classically as it has advanced in age with fine grained tannins and notes of turned earth, decimated red cherry and truffles.

2012 Comte de Vogue Bourgogne Blanc- this declassified Grand Cru Musigny blanc was fleshier, more advanced and oxidative than what we have had before. The first bottle was indestructible, linear with powerful minerals, shear lemon and lime; it needed hours of air in the decanter before it made its first budge. This second bottle had a rounder body, creamier in texture, rich vanilla, honey and tropical fruit. There was great energy in the room and in the bottles- there wasn’t a bad bottle in the lineup!

Graileys Live: Giuseppe Vaira of G.D. Vajra

Just in, winemaker Giuseppe Vaira of Vajra dropped by Graileys with a beautiful lineup of his family’s high altitude Piemontese wines. Although somewhat younger of an estate, having mostly sold their wines to negociants, Vajra is a small production house who’s wines are well known for their refined beauty, lifted aromatics and elegance. Today he showcased a stunning lineup from his crisp and bright Rose Rosabella and the crunchy minerally Riesling to his flagship Barolo, 2011 G.D Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole. All of these wines are very limited in Texas and well worth seeking out as they are truly soulful expressions of its region and varietal.

giuseppe vaira

Giuseppe Viara- second generation winemaker of his family’s winery, Vajra.

2014 G.D Vajra Langhe Riesling Petracine- Brilliant aromatics, sleek minerality, bright lemongrass and white peach. This is a rare treat for a Riesling lover’s collection! Only 7 cases came to TX!

2014 Vaira Riesling

Fun Facts: Vajra was the first to plant Riesling on the higher slopes of Piedmont and the word Petracine is an ancient name for Riesling, which you will see hidden in the vines on the label.

The 2011 G. D Vajra Barolo Albe was one of the highlights of the flight. The nose just explodes from the glass with crushed red cherries and forest floor. The texture is gorgeous with ripe, sweet tannins with flavors that are warm and welcoming. Overall, the Albe is a wonderfully sophisticated Barolo for any occasion that well overachieves for its price point.

2011 Vaira Barolo Albe

Albe is a blend of three different vineyards from three different altitudes.

The standout was his flagship Barolo- 2011 G.D Vajra Barolo Bricco dell Viole and it is beautiful! Only 550 cases are made from 67 year old vines of their small parcel in Bricco dell Viole and this elegant Barolo blew us away! We were all so impressed with its silky, creamy texture, its incredibly graceful and refined nature and its multidimensional layers! Crushed wild red cherry, explosive aromatics of wild rose and violets, red tea and soft eucalyptus beautifully integrated with dense spice, leather and hints of iron; these flavors just stayed on the tongue for moments well after the final sip. This is a very impressive, seductive Barolo and one of the most elegant that we have had of the vintage yet!

Classic Napa Cabernet Star

One of Napa’s classics dropped by Graileys for a quick afternoon tasting on his current lineup. We are always happy to see Ivan the Fiver walk in but when he walked in with Bob Egelhoff- what a treat! Although it was just for a brief moment- literally, it was a quick hello, taste and boomf they were off for the Cotes du Coeur- the lineup was great and Bob is a character one can’t forget. Bob Egelhoff is a superstar when it comes to making wines for some of Napa’s icons such as Merryvale, Pahlmeyer, Staglin, Robert Craig and Harlan. Much like the wines he has made in the past, Bob’s personal wines hold the essence of Napa- these are classic examples of Napa’s beautiful fruit made into gorgeous wines that you do not want to miss!

Bob Egelhoff tasting

2012 Egelhoff Russian River Pinot Noir- This is a super small production Pinot Noir (only 168 cases made!) from the Lauterbach vineyard in the heart of Russian River Valley. It is brightly aromatic and on the palate it just goes down way too easy with its sweet cherries and crushed raspberries. The texture is soft and plush and the rich flavors lead into lingering sweet finish.

2009 Egelhoff Cabernet Sauvignon- Smoking!! Showing at a beautiful spot right now with rich aromas of black cherry and spice followed by dense flavors of black cherry, cocoa, vanilla, mocha and blackberry. This is a richly textured, full bodied Cabernet that offers a lot of depth with its layered flavors that just stick to every crevice in the palate. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy and the finish is long.

Cote Rotie for the Win!

Last week Jot Camp, of Spain’s iconic sparkling wine house- Raventos, stopped in for a quick tasting. Put your Grower Champagnes aside, these are some serious Cava that belong in your glass. He tasted us on a spectacular flight of Cava comparing vintages 2011, 2012 and 2013. All of the vineyards are farmed biodynamically and everything is done by horses and hands. The two standouts had completely different tones: 2012 Conca del Riu Anoia L’Hereu and the 2011 Cava Gran Reserva de la Finca. The 2012 l’Hereu was bright, fresh and aromatic! It spends 18 months on its lees and the flavors are simply splendid: green and yellow apples, crunchy minerals, sweet lemons and jasmine. This is a perfect sparkler for summer. The 2011 Gran Reserva de la Finca ($34.95/btl!!) comes from 40-50 year old vines planted in higher plots in sand and this was the star of the flight! Crazy minerals zipped through the palate while tiny beads coated the mouth, each packed with abundant flavors from warm brioche to ripe melon, honey and seasoned nuts. The finish is ridiculously long, flinty and haunting. We were really impressed with these fascinating sparklers and I know anyone trying them would be too! The Gran Reserva de la Finca is a great Grower Champagne alternative for fractions less!

Raventos

Jot Camps of Raventos i Blanc

My wines of the week were two Northern Rhone stars: 1996 Guigal Chateau d’Ampuis Cote Rotie and 1997 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie. Awesome!!! Both were at a perfect stage: absolutely seamless. The fruit was lively and fresh in the ’96 Guigal Chateau d’Ampuis with elegant layers of leather, dried violets, dried herbs and star anise.

1996 Guigal Chateau d'Ampuis Cote Rotie

The 1997 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie was stunning! While the ’96 Guigal Ampuis Cote Rotie was like drinking silk, the ’97 R. Rostaing Cote Rotie was rich and velvety. Gorgeously preserved wild black berries, crushed mulberries, dark minerals and dense spice. A true beauty in the glass.

1997 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie

Marchesi di Barolo- 2010 Barolo Sarmassa is Smoking!

Earlier this week we were honored to host 4th Generation of Marchesi di Barolo, Valentina Abbona, who showcased an elegant flight of her family’s wines. Marchesi di Barolo is an Italian icon, creating some of the finest wines, especially their most celebrated single vineyard from Cannubi. Marchesi di Barolo’s historic cellar stores a massive library collection of thousands of bottles and hundreds of vats of Barolo to retouch bottles of the best vintages. What a dream to try some their Barolos of the crazy old and super rare, but for our flight, we focused more on the now with a terrific showing of 2010’s, 2011 and 2012. These are wines that you want in your cellar…

2012 Barbaresco- Bright, elegant and really easy to drink. Softer tannins, clean and modern on the palate.

2010 Barolo- Seductive texture! Round, mouth coating and full of wild ripe fruit, rich florals and dense spice.

2010 Barolo Sarmassa- ****! More focused in structure, broad shouldered, beautifully layered  with concentrated flavors. Everything was seamless in this bottle and with its extended finish, this was the star of the lineup! A stunning Barolo of true elegance, power and grace that I highly recommend to cellar and revisit decades down the road.

2011 Barolo Cannubi- The ’11 Cannubi is the preferred wine by Valentina for the glass now! A little more serious in the glass than the Sarmassa with power, more weight, more grip. Darker characters with deep minerality, licorice, espresso grinds and deep spice. Great compliments of fresh leather, black tea and blood orange zest throughout.
