Burgundy’s Rising Stars

We had a full house for our Burgundy tasting last Friday! We selected two rising stars from Burgundy aficionado Becky Wasserman’s Selections to seal our week with stellar Burgundy: Pierre Morey of Meursault and Lignier Michelot of Morey St. Denis. We had a lot of wines on the table so I will only showcase those that impressed us the most. If you have any questions on the others, do not hesitate to reach out to us! Both of these super talented winemakers represent a growing movement of young winemakers in Burgundy who have embraced transparency and anti-interventionism in winemaking over manipulation and technology. You may want to acquaint yourself with these estates before word spreads about this next generation of raw talent in Burgundy…

Pierre Moret Lineup

2011 Morey Blanc Saint Aubin Blanc Premier Cru- My wine of the night! The Saint Aubin Premier Cru blanc is rich and round in the palate while brightly expressive on the nose. It offers a killer expansive palate with an extended finish. The flavors just stick to every crevice of the palate with explosive orchard and citrus fruit, hints of honey, candied sage and bright minerals. This is one to keep stocked in the cellar; great as a house white while serious enough to enjoy at a special dinner.

2011 Pierre Morey Meursault Premier Cru Charmes- Sophisticated, polished and layered with fresh yellow apples, brown pear and elegant minerals that lead the palate. Soft tones of white and yellow flowers seamlessly integrate with notes of wild spices, mandarin orange zest and diluted honey. The finish is ever lasting. There is more to come of this powerful Meursault but for now, there isn’t a single note that doesn’t make me smile.

Lignier Michelot Lineup

2013 Lignier Michelot Morey St. Denis Vieilles Vignes- From 60 year old vines, there is a great intensity to the ’13 Morey St Denis VV. Explosive nose and a masculine palate that pushes the edge of Morey St. Denis. It’s powerful energy boasts dark crushed berries that compliment its fantastic mienrality and complexity with grace. This was the wine of the night for most and a great Burg for the glass now that will continue to please decades down the road.

2010 Lignier Michelot Morey St. Denis Premier Cur Aux Chezeaux- A stones throw from Gevrey Chambertin’s Grand Cru Mazoyeres Chambertin, the Aux Chezeaux Premier Cru is a beautiful continuation of Gevrey’s powerful style. Ripe and layered, the 2010 is showing at a stylish stage with rounded spice, dark ripe fruit and deep minerals. A gorgeous expression of its terroir, this is one that is wonderful for the glass now but guarantees a great lifetime ahead.

Napa’s Next Rising Star: Julien Fayard!

Last Friday, beloved member Ivan the Fiver dropped by Graileys with an up and coming talent of Napa, Julien Fayard! Julien creates some of my personal favorite under-the-radar Cabernets of Napa so it was a real treat to meet him and taste through his personal line: Azur Wines. Like his other boutique projects, Azur Wines is a true Napa gem that we have fallen in love with! You can find Julien and his wife Elan in their newly built winery and caves in Napa’s next hotspot, Coombsville. Having experienced winemaking at the best of France and California from Chateau Lafite Rothschilde and Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux to working side by side with Philippe Melka helping create the powerful wines of Tusk, Entre Nous and Perfect Season, Julien was born and bred to make great wine! Now this is a winemaker you want to follow…

As a native of Provence, his philosophy is to make wines that purely express its terroir and his 2015 Azur Rose ($35/btl) shows brilliant transparency, bright flavors and fabulous texture. This is one of my favorite domestic rose’s that quenches the palate with the best flavors of summer. Three Liters are a must for any pool party or bbq this summer!

We then tried his 2015 Azur Sauvignon Blanc ($35/btl)- a great balance of ripe, tropical fruits and zesty citrus with flinty minerality that had me going back for more! This is a great white for the summer glass but act quickly, only 250 cases were made!! True gem indeed.

2013 Azur Classic Cabernet Sauvignon ($79.95/btl)- Flashy, fleshy this impressive Cabernet overachieves for its price point with great balance, ripe flavors and a phenomenal structure that can take you a decade down the road with Cabernet bliss. Once again, this is oober-tiny in the production scale for Napa with only 272 cases made! If you are looking for a stunning Cabernet that can impress for under $100, this is a great wine to grab!

Lastly we tried the 2012 Azur Wines Reserve Red ($115/btl)- and it left a striking impression on us all! Beautifully integrated tannins and rich wild black and red fruit creates a mouthcoating sensation that every red wine lover must try. Sturdy backbone, ripe and juicy currants, explosive aromatics, great weight and texture, Julien nailed it with this ’12 Reserve! 260 cases made- grab a case to drink and a case for the cellar- you don’t want to miss this!

It’s no summer party without a 3L of Azur Rose!

Bevan Cellars’ Petaluma Gap Pinot for the Win!

Last night we welcomed the fabulous Victoria de Crescenzo of Bevan Cellars for the perfect Hump Day pick me up tasting of their 2014 Chardonnay and Pinot Noirs. Bevan Cellars has a great following and I completely understand why, the wines are shear crowd pleasers that just goes down way too easy. Each seat was sat and the wines were flowing with Bevan’s flashy Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay, the “sex-kitten” Petaluma Gap Pinot Noir and the “tom-cat” Rita’s Crown Pinot all from 2014.

2014 Bevan Cellars “Ritchie Vineyard” Chardnonay- $69.95/btl- From the famous “Ritchie Vineyard”, Russell Bevan’s interpretation is wonderfully balanced. Although rich and full bodied, there is beautiful minerality in its core creating this purity that gives this ripe and rich Chardonnay a bright lift that I quite enjoy. Each sip is filled with abundant flavors with spurts of yellow flowers, lemon zest and river rocks to keep your palate savoring for more.

2014 Bevan Cellars “Petaluma Gap” Pinot Noir- $79.95/btl- MEOW!! Now this is a sultry Pinot Noir! Ultra ripe bing cherries, raspberries and sweet cola spice coats the mouth while wild roses and dark spices completely charms the mid-palate. There is a ripe fruit-attack so juicy that it is almost nearing sweet; with a velvety texture and a solid finish, what’s not to love in this oober-sexy Pinot Noir.

2014 Bevan Cellars “Rita’s Crown” Pinot Noir- $79.95/btl- The Rita’s Crown held more oomph that the Petaluma didn’t have. Darker crushed berries here with more savory notes and deeper spice, the Rita’s Crown also holds more weight while still being very polished and supple in texture. Another great Pinot Noir from the Bevan Cellars selection that is perfect in the glass now that can also hold up for the next five to seven years; but with how good this Pinot Noir was showing last night, I wouldn’t be able to wait.

Graileys Takes Over Casa Rubia!!

Earlier this week I took over the entire core of Casa Rubia, Dallas’ hottest restaurant for Iberian cuisine, for a spectacular tasting of white and red wines of Northern Spain from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean. I started with the signature white and light red wines of Green Spain, moved eastward into the best subregions of Castille y Leon and finished the dinner strong with the powerful, iconic red wines from the oldest vines of Catalunya. Check out my tasting notes below and join me vicariously for a tasting of the finest of Northern Spain from one coast to the next!

6.21.2016 Casa Rubia N. Spain 1

2013 A. Coroa Godello, Valdeorras- Bright and crisp, refreshing white wine from Valdeorras’ ancient grape Godello. Angel Lopez is one of the few winemakers dedicating his life to bring revive and better the wines of his region. This Godello is carefully selected from the best parcels with high elevation and the best soils and the wine expresses the hard work and love that goes into the vineyards. A perfect, refreshing white wine for the summer or as an aperitif, it has enough crispness and refreshing qualities for Sauvignon Blanc lovers and great texture and weight for those who love Chardonnay. A true must have to beat the heat!

2007 Fillaboa Finca Monte Alba Albarino, Rias Baixas- Not your typical light Albarino, the Finca Monte Alba is not only one of the few single vineyard Albarino’s of Rias Baixas but also boasts from the steepest slopes and highest elevation of Rias Baixas. This is one serious Albarino with deep notes of dried lemon peel, wild yellow field flowers, preserved pear and fresh melon. There were more savory, spicy and mineral notes that gave this white wine a beautiful complexity not often found in youthful Albarino.

2011 Luis Rodriguez Torno Dos Pasas Tinoto, Ribiero- A fantastic lively red for the summer and a great Pinot Noir Alternative! Luis Rodriguez is highlighting his family’s vineyards with this uber elegant red blend. Gorgeous red berries just popped from the glass with notes of rose, cinnamon and crushed stones.  The seductive spices and supple texture makes this Spanish gem too easy to drink. It was perfect with the charcuterie, a local pairing, but I think it rocked with our octopus and clams!

6.21.2016 Casa Rubia N. Spain 3

2013 Descendientes de Jose Palacios Corullon, Bierzo- From the god-like mastermind Alvaro Palacios of Priorat, the Descendientes de J. Palacios is his Bierzo project that should not be missed! From 100% Mencia of old vines, this is a medium bodied red that is packed to the max with rich, exotic flavors. Insane amounts of red and black spice compliment the notes of spicy cured meat while juicy red and black berries and wild ripe herbs sing throughout the palate. The earth is deeper than the Ribeiro, but still fresh and clean. The texture is round, the flavors are compelling and the finish lingers with great breath.

2010 Vega Sicilia Valbuena, Ribera del Duero- The wine of the night- the 2010 Valbuena stole the show! Wow!! Beautiful and well composed with great structure, this is one of the most impressive Valbuena’s I have experienced yet! Red cherry, black cherry, sweet black plums and crushed blackberries are all ripe and explosive. Sweet leather, dense forest floor, iron, wild herbs, fresh vanilla beans, warm caramel, ripe sage, cardamon, I can go on and on! These great flavors filled the palate and lead into an extremely long finish. From this smoking vintage, this is a legend that should be stocked in every red wine lover’s cellar, to enjoy it’s youthful beauty now and to appreciate it’s full glory decades later.

6.21.2016 Casa Rubia N. Spain 2

2004 Capafons Osso Mas de Masos, Priorat- Going into the Mediterranean coast, I had a side by side of two Priorats from the epic 2004 vintage, both of 100+ year old Grenache and Carinena vines and this Priorat showed the most signature garrigue characteristics from the two Priorats in the lineup. From the sight to the nose and palate, everything was black and purple in the glass: dried crushed granite, espresso grinds, black olives, rosemary, violets, black pepper and dried plums and blackberries.

2004 Vall Llach Vall Llach, Priorat- My favorite of the Priorats, this is Vall Llach’s flagship wine from the estates oldest Carinena vines, if not all of Priorat and it is sexy sexy.. The wine is dark, deep and densely concentrated. The fruit is rich and beautifully expressive with multidimensional flavors from the Carinena, with equally captivating characteristics from the Cabernet and Merlot that is in the blend. Scorched earth, blackberries, black plums, dark spice, smoked meat, charcoal, and dark chocolate drives the palate. Even though it has amazing power and richness, there is a brilliant balance to this full bodied red with seductive velvety texture and a haunting finish.

6.21.2016 Casa Rubia N. Spain 4

This hunk of meat was perfect with the Valbuena and really blew up the Vall Llach and Espectacle de Montsant!!

2013 Espectacle del Montsant- I saved the most powerful for last! We finished this epic Northern Spain wine trip with a glass of 130 year old vine Grenache from a single vineyard in high and steep slopes of Montsant! Made by the rockstar of Priorat and true spearheading terroir-ist of the region, Rene Barbier, this newest release of Espectacle del Montsant is insane!! There is power and richness like no other yet it is brilliantly lively and extremely pure in the palate! I can’t honestly say that I know what molten lava tastes like, but if I had to imagine that flavor experience, it is fully in this glass! Dense black fruit and crushed granite fight for attention while wild spices and sweet ripe herbs dance around it. The wine completely takes over the palate in a mouthcoating sensation and the texture and structure is just as powerful as its flavors. The finish… what finish…. you mean I’m not still drinking the wine…?!

6.21.2016 Casa Rubia N. Spain

All of these wines are available for purchase. Let me know if I can grab any of these beauties  to recreate this flight for you! kim@graileys.com

Graileys’ BBQ Saturday Social!

Last Saturday, we hosted our first Saturday social with a full out BBQ, Texas style! The heat didn’t phase our beloved member, Brad Donnell, as he hitched his giant smoker to Graileys to cook up a heaping serving of meats for our event. With all this great bbq, even more bottles of wine were passed around in true Graileys’ fashion. We thank all of the members who joined us for this terrific event!

6.16.2016 bbq

From Burgundy to California and Spain in between, there was not a single bad bottle in the lineup.

2012 Michel Gay Chorey Les Beaune- Lovely little red Burg with crushed red fruit and fresh minerals that drive the wine.  Gorgeous layers of rose, cinnamon and a touch of clay round out the palate. This is a beautiful light red wine to enjoy for the summer heat.

2012 Domaine Droughin “Laurene” Oregon Pinot Noir- tart red cherries, raspberries and crushed cranberries with notes of lemon and orange zest. Lots of crushed limestone minerality in this pleasing Willamette Pinot.

2008 CVNE Vina Real Rioja Gran Reserva- I always love this over-achiever Tempranillo! Powerful and full of earth, spice and dried red fruit all seamless and delicious.

2011 La Grange Veuve de Figeac Saint Emilion- One of my favorite Bordeaux for the daily glass! This bottle showed a lot more tertiary notes upfront, but after some air, the black and blue fruit pulled through.

2014 Vernay Cotes du Rhone Sainte Agathe- Earth, olive tapenade, rosemary, crushed raspberries, star anise, tar, thyme, herb de Provence, ripe plums and smoke- this was the perfect bottle for the bbq! If you like your wine ripe and dirty, Vernay is the wine for you and the Cotes du Rhone Sainte Agathe is a stunning value to stock up for the summer.

2012 Mauro- Great juicy red for a solid crowd pleaser.

2010 Mauro VS- this bottle shows the power of Tempranillo with its mouthcoating, velvety texture and dense flavors. This is a full throttle red wine that is beautiful and easily seductive in the glass now, but I’d like to see where this massively structured wine could go in another decade or more.

2011 Macan Rioja- One of my favorites from the lineup! Beautifully complex with multidimensional notes of gorgeous red and black berry fruit, shaved coconut, fresh dill, and leather jumped out of the glass while concentrated spices of orange zest, vanilla and cardamon and iron, rose petals, fresh bay leaves and wild herbs added complexities to this stunning wine. The finish lingered persistently with notes of crushed red berries, leather and coconut.

2012 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon- the favorite Cabernet of the night, the ’12 Beringer Private Reserve was fantastic straight from the bottle with polished fruit, silky texture and ripe sweet tannins.

2012 Kamen Cabernet Sauvignon- Concentrated, sweet juice of black berry, black currant and black cherry; this is a commanding Cabernet! The fruit is ridiculously ripe, plump and sweet and everything that follows knocks the palate over with intensity.

2012 Ulysses Cabernet Sauvignon- a true knockout! My personal favorite Cabernet from the lineup, this Oakville project by Dominus rocks in every way! It takes some time to open up, but about an hour in the decanter and this smoking wine soars! It becomes beautifully expressive with wild violets, mocha, black berries, black currants and vanilla. There are layers of chunky gravel and forest floor that adds an element of complexity, but its the seductive fruit that I am fully addicted to in the Ulysses Cab!

6.16.2016 bbq3

The BBQ was great! Thank you Brad for the amazing brisket, chicken and ribs!

6.16.2016 bbq1

We can’t have an event without bubbles! We had a spectacular showing of rose champagnes for our bbq!

NV Drappier Rose- bright and loud with expressive juicy red fruit, hints of lemon zest and fresh minerals! This is an easy drinker and perfect for sipping on a summer evening or all day by the pool.

NV Ruinart Rose- Also bright and fresh but with a more sophisticated structure than the Drappier. More polished overall with seductive, ripe fruit, beautiful minerality, and with great lift.

NV Henriot Rose- House favorite, really creamy, toasty notes of smashed strawberries, raspberry pie, brioche, sweet cream and clove.

6.16.2016 bbq4

6.16.2016 bbq2

A birthday toast and cheers to AJ by Member #9! As you can see, the entire event was nothing but smiles, good food, great wine and spectacular company! Thank you to all those who came out and was a part of this memorable Saturday afternoon.

The Man, The Myth, The Legend- Bob Levy

The man, the myth, the legend of Napa, Bob Levy, the creator of wines that have spawned some of the greatest Cabernet experiences had at Graileys, dropped in with his posse and highlighted our mid-week with a tasting of his commanding red wines. He started us on a vertical of the Ampersand, a forward Cabernet driven blend from a selection of lots culled from the flagship wine, Levy & McClellan- the personal label of Bob Levy and the equally famed Martha McClellan.

Bob Levy 6.15.2016

Bob Levy and Ampersand 2010, 2011 and 2012

2010 Ampersand- Powerful black fruit with pronounced notes of mocha, black pepper, leather and coal. Hints of mint and dense leaves gives the wine more layers and compliments the compacted blackberry, black currant fruit notes that drives the wine. The finish is lengthy and pure.

2011 Ampersand- Intense cassis and blackerry fruit; powerful and reserved, the ’11 Ampersand held darker, deeper mineral notes. Rich forest floor, dusty minerality with notes of pipe tobacco, cigar paper and dense ash. Dark black spices of licorice, star anise and clove weave in and out of the dense, black fruit. The finish leaves a note of fine leather and black currants.

2012 Ampersand- Also deep, rich and bold but much more wildly expressive! Candied black berries and black cherry jam raced up the palate followed by equally intense notes of toasted coconut, purple and red petals, slate and crushed black pepper. Straight forward, polished and sexy. The finish is shorter than experienced in the ’10 but the mid-palate is fully loaded and boasting with great flavors!

Boby Levy 6.15.2016 .1

2011 Levy & McClellan- More focused than the ’12 with savory earth driven tones. Roasted herbs, soft leather, dark chocolate and dried spice filled the palate with tight black currant tying everything together.

2012 Levy & McClellan- This was a kickass Cabernet! Explosive black and red fruit, sweet cigar, eucalyptus and rich cedar were the first notes that popped out to me and each layer was wonderfully expansive! The tannins were rich and sweet and the finish is dense and strong. From the lively nose to the mouth-coating palate and the powerful structure to the lengthy finish, everything about this wine is commanding, glorious and seductive!

A Graileys’ Wine Experience at Vaquero

Over the weekend, my colleagues and I had a special opportunity to host an extraordinary wine dinner at the Vaquero Club. For this special event, I prepared a wonderful selection of highly praised wines that are some of our favorites at Graileys while Vaquero Club Executive Chef Andrew Barlow created a masterpiece menu to pair with the lineup. This was a first major Graileys’ wine dinner event at Vaquero and with the overwhelming reaction from the happy guests, I am sure this will not be the last time I visit Vaquero…

Vaquero Dinner 6.11.2016

vaquero 6.11.2016 menu

Local Goat Cheese with Sparkling Honey

Rosewood Ranch Beef Tartare on Brioche with Fennel

Compressed Melon and Prosciutto

NV Henriot Rose ChampagneOne of our favorite Rose Champagnes for the price, the Henriot Rose easily drinks double its price! With its signature creamy texture and rich flavors, these gorgeous and delicious bubbles is notorious for seducing just about anyone’s palate! Bright crushed raspberries with hints of lemon rind, vanilla, cream and toast, this is a great Champagne to start any dinner or just to drink on its own as a quick refresher during the summer season. The beef tartare on brioche was my favorite light bite with the Henriot Rose Champagne!

I can’t thank the Vaquero team enough for such a spectacular event!

Baja Day Boat Scallop with Abalone, Mexican White Shrimp, Baby Pea Greens, Turnip, Farro, Almond, Lemon

2007 Arnaud Ente Meursault Clos de Ambres- The next star of Meursault, Arnaud Ente is a mastermind creating beautiful, polished Chardonnay that can compete with the best producers of White Burgundy. Coming from Chardonnay vines that are at least 65 years old from a small lie dit east of the town of Meursault, the flavors are abundant yet compacted, the wine is focused yet expansive and the minerals just cling the palate creating a lengthy lovely finish. Meyer lemons, lemongrass, lime and crushed limestone lead the palate while elegant layers of sweet cream, fennel and spice melt into the citrus and minerals. Add the seared scallops, shrimp and farro the wine was shot straight into another dimension!

2014 Paul Hobbs Ulises Valdez Pinot NoirA beautiful Pinot Noir from the heart of the praised Ulises Valdez Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River Valley, it was perfect with the Bison Tenderloin dish! This fantastic Pinot had great weight and multidimensional flavors that paralleled the dish to the tee! With the Pinot’s ultra supple texture and long finish; the wine was spectacular on its own, but in taking a sip of the wine along with a bite of the dish, Paul Hobbs Ulises Valdez Pinot and every component in Chef Andrew’s Bison dish was a marriage meant to be!

Vaquero 6.112016 Pinot

A-5 Japanese Wagyu New York Bone Marrow, Pink Peppercorn, Kennebec Potato, Foraged Mushrooms, Foie Gras, Currant

(not pictured due to a blissful trance of food, wine and great company)

2005 Cos d’Estournel, Second Growth, St. Estephe- This was a great pairing of both powerful Cabernet driven wines from the Old World and New with the final savory course. The 2005 Cos was the wine of the night! With a little over ten years under its belt, the flavors were well integrated and round. The texture was smooth while still holding its strength with a little bit more grip that compliantly soaked up the richness and the proteins of the dish.

2013 Perfect Season Cabernet Sauvignon- The Perfect Season has been absolutely fabulous in past showings but with the richness of the bone marrow, the dense umami of the foie and wild flavors of the mushrooms and the sauce, the flavors that I already love in the ’13 Perfect Season went through the roof! The ripe fruit and the velvety texture just wrapped around the components of this course and created a stunning experience!

BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE TERRINE, NECTARINE, CHERRIES, PISTACHIO, BURNDT ORANGE

A fantastic night indeed with the great members and the talented team of Vaquero! There is nothing I love more in dining than when the dish and the wine are both elevated into greater levels that might not have been experienced when served alone. Bravo to the Vaquero Team and many thanks for having us host a wonderful event!

Champs for Champs! Graileys Annual Dom Perignon Dinner!

Last week we were honored to host the lead winemaker of Dom Perignon, Vincent Chaperon, for our annual Dom Perigon Dinner and what a nigh!  This is one of our most highly anticipated events that turn into the most memorable wine experiences to be had here at Graileys. This year, Dom Perignon and Graileys really blew it up for our members with a spectacular lineup of Dom Perignon and a stunning menu paired by Chef Darren McGrady of Eating Royally- the personal chef of fifteen years to Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Princess of Wales and Princes’ William and Harry and has also cooked for five US Presidents. The wines were extravagant and the food was impressive but the company was what made the night as fabulous as it was.

6.09.2016 dp lineup

Lineup of Graileys’ Annual Dom Perignon Dinner 2016

2006 Dom Perignon

2004 Dom Perignon Rose

1993 Dom Perignon Rose P2

1998 Dom Perignon P2

1983 Dom Perignon P3

1988 Dom Perignon Rose P3

6.09.2016 table

2006 Dom Perignon- As our members arrived, we poured an endless amount of Dom Perignon 2006 for our guests. This vintage is simply delicious. Explosive straight out of the bottle with rich flavors and creamy texture. It has a bright start with a wonderfully expansive palate fully loaded with dense flavors and complimentary notes of flint and smoke. Light hints of lemon, almond and white flowers kept the Champagne lifted while brisk minerals of river rocks and crushed shells added addictive complexities to the bubbles.

6.09.2016 2006 dp

2004 Dom Perignon Rose- More structured and more reserved with beautiful minerality driving the wine followed by tart strawberries, crushed raspberry and stunning spice. This is a rose Champagne to hold onto for decades if you have the patience.

1993 Dom Perignon Rose P2- Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! I fell head over heels for this Rose Champagne! Each sip was fully packed with rich flavors, deep spice and compelling savory notes, but the texture was what got me really hooked. Round, ultra creamy bubbles that would expand its wild flavors to every crevice in the palate. The finish was just as stunning as the wine itself. This was the winning Champagne of the night and a true must have Champagne for any lover of fine Champagne.

6.09.2016 1998 P2

1998 Dom Perignon P2- A true expression of how dynamic Champagne can be. The first time we had this, it was linear, reserved and tight, but this time around, it was a completely different animal. Locked and loaded with insane complexities from rich golden orchard fruit, crushed almonds and cherry blossoms to exotic spice and ocean breeze. The finish was lengthy and the texture was absolutely seductive. This was a spectacular showing!

1983 Dom Perignon P3- Impressive thirty three year old Brut that was ready to go with a warm personality. The flavors were more toasty with bruised brown pears, baked apples, cherry pit and custard pie. Hints of dried magnolias, preserved lemons, toasted walnuts and warm spice gave this P3 extra flair. It was very interesting to pair the ’98P2 and the ’83P3 side by side. The 98P2 won it for me in this pairing, but the ’83P3 wasn’t that far behind.

6.09.2016 winemaker

Lead Winemaker Vincent Chaperon and Brand Team Audrey Morley

1988 Dom Perignon P3 Rose- We saved the best for last with this spellbinding rose Champagne- beautiful silky texture, seamless flavors and wonderful dimensions. As the ’98 DP P2 showed us how dynamic Champagne can be, this ’88 DP P3 Rose showed us how ageless Champagnes can be and no house has quite the longevity that is as prized as the treasures of Dom Perignon. This Champagne was the star of the show last year and it continues to shine with amazing grace.

6.09.2016

In true Graileys’ style there were a plenitude of other shocking bottles opened. We had a phenominal comparison of two Manfred Krankle’s wines along with wines from his leading assistant winemakers who are rising stars in their own right.

2004 Sine Qua Non Ode to E Syrah-  Holy smokes-! I truly believe a supernatural power from the above has blessed the smoke nuance in this Syrah! It was powerful but focused and clean. Accompanied with ripe powerful black currants, crushed black berries, creme de cassis, black pepper, liquid charcoal and licorice, this SQN took you for a wild ride!

2011 Sine Qua Non Patine Grenache- More red fruit driven in nature, with core flavors of ripe olives, violets and star anise. Also a stunning bottle but it’s power was overwhelming for my palate. A monstrous baby, this SQN needs more time to smooth out and grow.

6.09.2016 dp dinner

Vincent Chaperon intrigued by the 2004 SQN Ode to E

2013 Andremily Syrah- My new favorite domestic Syrah!! This is a new project (only the second vintage) by Manfred’s right hand man, Jim Binns, and a project you want to follow! These wines came out strong with 2012 hitting 97 points on Parker and this 2013 vintage hitting 99! To my palate, the ’13 Andremily left the biggest impact with its impressive balance! Everything in this bottle was rich, ripe and glorious, but with that said, there is an impeccable balance in this Syrah that struck every cord for me. Find this wine and buy everything you can! This one is going to be the next cult people can only dream to get in their cellars!

2011 Lillian Gold Series Syrah- This Syrah is made by one of my favorite winemakers, Maggie Harrison, the first Manfred Assistant turned winemaking rockstar. There is an elegance in this wine that wasn’t as prevalent in the two SQN’s and the Andremily. The aromatics in the Lillian was much more lifted and perfumed and the texture more silky. Also powerful, but much more graceful, this is a beautiful Syrah that I continue to be in love with.

6.09.2016 Syrah and Grenache

Once we pop, we just can’t stop! Other Champagnes popped up after all the Dom Perignon was out. Krug Grande Cuvee splits are always a house favorite; the 1999 Burno Paillard Nec Plus Ultra wonderfully crisp and minerally; the 1988 Roederer Cristal was warm and toasty; and you can never go wrong with a bottle of Ruinart Blanc de Blanc.

A botttle of 1970 Dom Perignon OEnotheque was shared by the generous and beloved Champagne Dave! My most memorable Champagne experiences have been through the generosity of Champagne Dave and this bottle tops them all! This was a very special bottle of wine. Beautifully fresh with wonderful white and yellow petals but seductively toasty and savory with notes of brioche, lemon curd, deep minerals and dense spice. Outside the 1982 Dom Perignon P3, this Champagne outshines any Champagne I have had yet!

1990 Aldo Conterno Barolo Takes the Win!

46 Year Old Rioja, a flight of Philippe Melka wines, a set of 1990’s Bordeaux, Barolo and Burgundy, oh my! Last night was quite lively with two dynamic groups opening up fantastic wines of both the Old World and New. Our first group had an impressive lineup of ripe and juicy, full bodied Cabertnets that anyone could easily fall for. My favorite from the lineup was the 2012 Melka CJ Cabernet, it’s great for the everyday glass with its plush tannins, approachable structure and explosive flavors. The 2013 Perfect Season always makes a huge impression in any crowd with its seductive fruit and mouth coating texture. The wine is rich in baking spices with notes of warm vanilla and coconut cream leading to a lengthy finish that makes the palate want more. It’s always a happy table when Philippe Melka’s wines are in the glass.

Our second group had a table filled with the old and rare. Mr. Richebourg opened a fantastic bottle of 1990 Leoville Barton! Wow, one of the better bottles of ’90 Leoville Barton that we have had with silky texture, dried and toasty spices, dried blackberry and black currant that gorgeously complemented the deep cedar, dense forest, matured leather and iron that were the leading notes in the palate. The finish was lengthy and smooth. Dr.E. opened up a stunning bottle of the 1995 Hospice de Beaune Corton Grand Cru Cuvee Charlotte Dumay by Dominique Laurent, now that’s a mouthful! The nose was very attractive with beautiful dried strawberries, red cherry, a touch of blackberry and soft, rounded spice. On the palate, everything was seamless. Red tea, nutmeg and coriander danced with the red and black fruit, while mushrooms, forest, truffle and turned soil sang the tune. A beloved local Restaurateur opened one of my favorite bottles of the night, a bottle of 1990 Aldo Conterno Barolo- wow! Simply extraordinary! The tannins have almost completely melted away, only making a presence more towards the finish. Wonderfully preserved red cherry pith, smashed raspberries and red currant was brilliant on the nose and palate and the spices and earth had mesmerizing powers! Leather, round black pepper, rich iron, rose, truffles; I can go on and on. The 1970 Faustino Rioja Gran Reserva was a great treat! The nose was explosive with insane funk that had me at first think that it could be old Chateauneuf du Pape, but the signature red cherry and dill came shining through and wouldn’t leave; it had to be old Rioja and it was wildly complex and quite splendid but ready to be drunk!

Old Bordeaux Wows Us All!

We sealed the week with a trio of terrific old Bordeaux, aged to perfection: 1988 Chateau l’Angelus, 1985 Leoville Las Cases and 1989 Cantemerle. The 1988 Angelus was stunning straight from the bottle with gorgeous elements of dried tea, dried tobacco, turned earth and dried violets. The fruit was beautifully present and the wine was cashmere smooth with a killer finish that seamlessly shadowed its dried sweet herbs and preserved crushed mulberry fruit. Simply Gorgeous!

1988 Angelus

The 1985 Leoville Las Cases was my favorite of the night! Also singing straight from the bottle with vibrant aromatics, deep and complex palate and a finish that lingered with every essence of flavor. Ripe cigars and black currant swim around the palate with youthful intensity while crushed gravel, sweet eucalyptus and dense spice held this multi-layered wine in one beautiful piece.

1989 Cantemerle- Oak derived spices drove the palate with delicate fruit following suite. Not as explosive as it once was but beautifully silky and elegant in the palate.
