“Wine is sunlight, held together by water.” – Galileo

By: LA Perkel

And so there we were, on a Wednesday at Graileys, being held together by mutual admiration for how great these wines were showing.

1992 Rene and Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Grand Cru ‘Les Preuses’

The wine combines power and depth with purity of flavors and zippy acidity. The nose showed high-toned aromatics (pear, green apple, lemon, white peach, wet stones, sea shells) along with suggestions of earth and roasted hazelnuts. The palate was exceptionally rich, lush in texture, yet reined back in by a vibrant acidity that just kept the flavors going. Persistent finish marked by citrus and minerals. The wine was so fresh and seemed so youthful.

1964 Remoissenet Grands-Echezeaux

I am turning into a huge Remoissenet fan. Virtually every single bottle we’ve opened has been impressive and this bottle was no different. So fragrant on the nose giving aromas of raspberries, dried cherries, floral, a touch of earth and sweet spice. The palate had a beautiful sweetness and a silky, elegant mouth feel.

1985 Luigi Einaudi Barolo

Pungent aromas. Slight VA when first opened reminiscent of nail polish that blew off after an hour or so of aeration. Slowly aromas of tar, cigar box, truffle, iron and forest floor started to emerge from the glass. The palate was full with resolved tannins and still vibrant acidity. Tart cherry, forest floor, and tar flavors. Amazing complexity. Polished the rest of this bottle at home with the meaty/tangy Taleggio and Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Some Great Wines

By: AJ McClellan

What a great night at Graileys! We had a great group of members around the table and everyone was popping some excellent bottles.

2007 Schrader To Kalon – Up until this point Shrader was a cult Cali Cab that I have not had much respect for. I have tried several different labels from several different vintages and feel that for the price they continuously fall short of their lofty price point. That being said this bottle was quite nice. A very fragrant nose of wild strawberries and Bing cherry with pleasant spice notes. The palate was balanced and while still showing gripping tannins the wine will evolve to be excellent in another five years.

1996 Guigal Chateau d’Ampuis Cote Rotie – This bottle is always drinking great. Big smoke, leather, tobacco, and tar on the nose with a palate of smoked bacon and coffee grounds.

1994 Chateau de Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin – We opened this bottle the day before and put a cork back in it, not sure if the bottle was flawed or just foul. We opened it back up and while the wine had improved to a drinkable level I cannot justify the lofty price on this wine…

1989 Lynch Bages – A great bottle of wine! Lynch Bages always delivers an excellent wine for the price. The fruit was just starting to fade to the back and the musty forest floor was pushing past it to get to the forefront. A great bottle of wine.

1989 Opus one – Surprisingly delicious. The Opus One was drinking with a wonderful elegance showing black currants, raspberries, and plums on the nose and palate. The fruit was still strong and backed by a well integrated tanninc backing.

2008 SQN B20 – I have nick named this wine big burtha. The bottle is voluptuous in all the right places with a little extra to go around. Smoke, tar, leather, and enough black fruit to smother a platoon of savvy wine drinkers.

An old friend comes to visit.

By: LA Perkel

Bob is no stranger to Graileys. He is, in fact, becoming a much-loved regular guest. He was in town last week for the annual Dallas American Heart Association’s Cotes du Coeur charity event. And he made it a point to stop at Graileys bearing gifts. He generously shared a few bottles of his current releases with our members to taste. Personally, it was refreshing to see a Riesling from Napa Valley, quiet uncommon these days considering how Napa is largely synonymous with Cabernet Sauvignon nowadays. It was likewise a treat to taste a vertical of his Cabernet Sauvignon from 2006, 2007, and 2008 vintages and experience the nuances brought by vintage and bottle age differences. Bob’s Cabernet program is anchored by Glendale Ranch Vineyards, a 15-acre property located in the upper part of Conn Valley east of St. Helena.

2010 Riesling, Napa Valley

This comes from the few remaining acres of Riesling vines planted in Napa Valley; most have been uprooted in favor of the sought-after, more expensive Cabernet Sauvignon.  Bob’s “pool lemonade” is youthful and fresh showing white peach, honey, and melon aromas. On the palate, it is off- dry and vibrant with ripe nectarine and peach flavors providing balance to the brisk acidity.

2008 Walton Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

The Walton label is named after Bob’s wife Marianna’s maiden name. First released in 2006, this wine is made in an approachable, fruit-forward, supple-textured style. It shows upfront aromas of cinnamon, mulberry, cassis, blackberry, sweet oak, and vanilla lead to a palate that is dry, full-bodied, with ripe and soft tannins. This wine is showy right out of the bottle; a perfect red to open while you wait for the Egelhoff Cabernet Sauvignon to aerate.

2006 Egelhoff Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Released 2 years ago, the extra bottle age has really done this wine a lot of good. It is at a great drinking stage right now. Complex, elegant, layered aromas of leather, black cherry, red plums, blueberry and sweet toasty oak. The palate is full-bodied but not heavy. Harmonious, silky textured with fine and well-integrated tannins on the palate. Amazing acidity that kept the wine lively. Persistent finish marked by blueberry notes.

2007 Egelhoff Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

This is a powerhouse of a wine with plenty of ripe tannins, explosive dark fruit flavors that were balanced by good levels of acidity. An excellent example of the much-heralded 2007 vintage.  Dense and concentrated with rich black cherry, cassis, sweet spice, and crushed blackberries. This wine showed considerably more structure and power than the 2006 vintage.

2008 Egehoff Cabernet Sauvignon

Big, concentrated, but balanced. Dark berries on the nose with cedar, sweet spice, and mocha lead to a compact, well-structured palate brimming with intense fruit flavors. Although the wine is drinking now for its ripeness and flavor intensity, this has the structure to last another decade in bottle.

Good Friday is Great at Graileys

By: AJ McClellan

Good Friday was a great night at Graileys. We had a slew of excellent wines opened around the table and each bottle was showing very well.

1986 Pichon Lalande – The Pichon was drinking great! Classic Bordeaux with a very earthy nose backed by dried red cherries. The palate was soft and plush in the middle with subtle floral notes and big forest floor.

2009 Corra Cabernet – The Corra Cabernet is always a pleasure to drink. The 09 was showing rich chocolaty notes with big cooking spice and ripe blue and black fruits.

1996 La Mondotte – This wine was very tight when I first opened it and unexpectedly funky. Hugh barnyard notes with sweaty horse hide and saddle leather were bounding  off the nose of this wine. After some time in the glass the wine calmed down and the rich dark fruit started to shine.

2005 Ornellaia – The Ornellaia was drinking much smoother than I thought it would be. Plush red and black fruit on the nose and palate with pleasant earthy aromas and a subtle minerality on the finish.

2007 Gargiulo Vineyards Money Road Ranch Cabernet – Typical high end Cali cab. Great fruit with solid tannin structure and a rich finish.

2007 Spottswood Cabernet –  I was very impressed with the 07 Spottswood. Last year when I tasted this wine it was showing great potential but it was wound so tight I thought it would take a few years to soften up. The 07 we had last  night was in a great drinking window with well integrated tannins and a great mouthfeel.

2009 The Vineyardist Cabernet – This bottle was brought in as a sample from a local distributor. The wine was good showing dark fruit and pleasant cooking spice but simply fell short of its price point in my opinion.

2009 Encosta Cabernet –Another sample bottle that was not showing as well as its price point would suggest.

A Few Gems

By: AJ McClellan

Good times at Graileys. We were not overly busy yesterday but what we lacked for in quantity we made up for in quality! A few good members dropped in and pulled out some real gems from their cellar…

1998 Harlan – The Harlan was showing very well. Dark fruit with big chocolate and tobacco notes. I would like to see the wine with three or four more years in the bottle to allow the tannins to soften a little more.

1999 Grange – The Grange was kicking! Typical eucalyptus notes on the nose with big stony minerality and a pleasant black berry nuance on the end. The palate was beefy with huge tannins and sweet black fruit.

Graileys! Pushing the Boat Out…

By: AJ McClellan

Wow, what a night! We had Mark McWilliams, owner and winemaker for Arista wines, as well as Tom Hinde from Martinelli stop in for a glass of wine, and in true Graileys style we pushed the boat out for them! Some great bottles were opened and I must say that I am proud of the Giacosa Barbaresco for hanging in there with the monster 94 Abreu and the lovely 95 Guigal…

1997 Dugat Py Charmes Chambertin – A big boisterous style of Burgundy. If the wine had any less earth I would call it a Cali Pinot all day… Big black fruits with ridged tannins and massive in the mouth.

1996 Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Les Combettes – Classic Leflaive. Honey comb on the palate with quince, apricot, hay, and big limestone.

2010 AJ Adam Riesling – This was a fun bottle of Riesling. Dry on the palate with notes of white peach, shale, petrol, and white flowers.

1995 Guigal La Landonne – A monster wine with huge tannins. We decanted the bottle for almost two hours before getting into it. Meat, bacon, smoke, tar, leather, and animal fur. Classic Guigal.

1994 Abreu – This was a cool bottle of wine. We left it out overnight and it was just as good if not better the second day. Bright red cherries with black currants and sweet plums on the nose. The palate was not as soft as I would have liked but it was very complex with notes of clove, cinnamon, and allspice.

1997 Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet 1er Les Folatieres – Oxidized.

1988 Bruno Giacosa Santo Stefano di Neive Barbaresco Red Label – Giacosa is a fun bottle to drink. Upon opening we almost wrote the bottle off as cooked, but after having this wine several times I suggested that we give it some time in the glass. After almost an hour we were all ready to throw the bottle away as it still was showing cooked fruits and funky wet fur notes. After another half an hour the wine turned a complete 360! Wonderful earth notes with cooked red fruits and huge forest floor. A lovely bottle of wine!

2007 Yao Ming Cabernet Sauvignon – This was the first bottle of Yao Ming’s personal wine label that has been opened on US soils, or so I was told. The wine was big and bold much like Yao Ming himself. Huge black fruits and spice with none-too-subtle oak notes and a pleasant finish.

1989 Leoville Barton – Classic Bordeaux. We have had this wine several times recently and it always drinks very well. Pretty in the glass with earth and black fruits.

2007 Martinelli Chardonnay – Oak, butter, more oak.

2009 Domaine Colin Deleger Chevalier Montrachet – This was a lovely bottle of wine. The acidity was searing with a lovely backing of tropical fruits and wonderful minerality. This wine is drinking well now but with some more time in the bottle I foresee it turning into a truly amazing bottle.

Some Great Wines From Billecart Salmon

By: AJ McClellan

Champagne was the word of the day yesterday. Goeffrey Loisel from the Billecart Salmon estate came in to taste our members on his lineup of grower Champagnes. Every bottle by Billecart was wonderful, it has been a long while since I have been this impressed by every wine in a producers portfolio! Each bottle was constructed with beautiful balance and a hint of elegance that is the tell tale sign of a quality wine.

1996 Nyetimber – This is a great bottle from England. The nose was very yeasty with notes of peach and lemon zest.

NV Gonet Medeville Rose – I love this wine. The nose shows notes of strawberry with a creamy palate and a lovely finish of limestone.

1988 Salon – Wow, this was a real treat. The wine was showing notes of honeydew, apricot, toast, and sourdough bread on the nose. The palate was fresh and lively with great acidity and a long mineral finish.

NV Billecart Salmon Brute Reserve – This wine surprised me, showing very fruit forward notes of cherry, meyer lemon, and strawberry. The palate was soft and showing light effervescence and creamy acidity.

2000 Nicolas Francois Billecart Salmon – A wonderful vintage Champagne showing big mineral notes and a lovely light pear filled pastry finish.

NV Billecart Salmon Rose – A very light Rose showing red cherries, raspberries, and soft luscious tannins backed by a zippy acidity.

2010 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay – I blinded this bottle as a very good Meursault. The nose was all toast and rich tropical fruit. The palate has a very nice medium acidity and long finish.

1978 Cheval Blanc – This Cheval Blanc was drinking much better than the last one we had. The wine was showing great notes of black cherry and cola with dark chocolate and luscious earth notes.

A Night for Burgundy

By: AJ McClellan

Yesterday was a Great night for Burgundy. We had a slew of great wines opened around the table; one of the special surprises was Jay McDonald’s EIEIO wines. They captured the essence of Oregon, perfectly accentuating all of the attractive attributes that I love from Oregon but Jay was light handed enough in the winemaking style that the vineyards were allowed to show off what they had to offer.  Yummy…

1978 Remoissenet Mazi Chambertin – Classic Remoissenet. I blinded as a 89 Gevrey Chambertin, the wine was showing very youthful with bright red fruit and classic earth and forest floor on the palate. Matt described the wine as “someone trying to light a roll of smarties on fire with a punk”, and I think he hit the nail on the head….

1989 Remoissenet Richebourg – Corked

1996  Domaine Leflaive Puligny Montrachet Les Combettes – At first nose I thought the wine was wonderful. Then I tasted the bottle and felt that it lacked acidity and was a touch flabby on the palate. I brushed the wine off as having premox… Well I went back to the bottle after a few hours and it was very interesting. The nose had started to pick up the oxidized notes of caramel and honey but the palate had reversed itself showing bright lemon notes with hazelnut and a long tropical finish. A very interesting bottle…

1998 Leroy Pommard Les Vignots – This was the Domaine bottling by Leroy. A very good bottle of Burgundy, the wine opened up immediately showing dusty cherry with tilled earth, cooked clove, and peach pipe tobacco.  The palate was very smooth with a hint of roughness to the tannins but all together well integrated.

2008 EIEIO “E” – This was my first time to try these wines and I was very impressed. Made by Jay McDonald, you can tell he has a sense of humor just by looking at the name of the wine, this is quintessential Oregon pinot noir! The nose showed sour red cherries with notes of tanned leather and some great minerality. You could tell there was a touch of toastyness from the 20% new oak that Jay uses but it was well integrated into the wine and served to point out all the attractive attributes of the wines rather than to hide any flaws.

2009 EIEIO “O” – This EIEIO’s top of the line bottling, only produced in exceptional years. The “O” label was slightly bigger than the everyday “E” label showing more potential for aging. The nose had the same classic Oregon smell with dry dusty tannins and a lovely black fruit finish.

1994 Domaine Armand Rousseau Charmes Chambertin – I was a little suspect of this wine when we first opened it, but if Burgundy has taught me anything it is patience. After an hour in the glass the wine finally cast off its damp nose and emerged with dark raspberries, vanilla bean, barn yard, and a note that reminds me of a old dirt crusted shovel that has been left out in the sun too long.

2000 Domaine Lamarch Clos de Vougeot – This was a very interesting bottle as well. Notes of wet fur, chewing tobacco, black currants, and dark chocolate showed on the nose and palate. The wine was done in a bigger style reminding me of a NSG….

You Show Me Yours!!

By: AJ McClellan

Friday night was our quarterly You Show Me Yours I’ll Show You Mine tasting. The tasting was more epic than usual as we had several winners from previous tasting in the lineup. It was a tight race but I believe that that best bottle of the night won the tasting…

1863 Boal Madeira – The Madeira was very interesting. Burnt rubber and scorched red fruit showed on the nose and palate. The mid palate was a little thin but the finish was so long that I could taste the wine for half of my car ride home that evening…

1999 Bouchard La Romanee – The La Romanee was not showing as well as I think it could. That being said I do not think it got a fair shake. The wine was opened late and drank first in the lineup of wines. I held onto a sliver of the wine till the end of the night and after almost six hours of being in the glass the wine began to crawl out of its shell showing rustic cherry notes with searing minerality and a wonderful finish wild flowers and spice.

1978 Latour –  Classic Bordeaux. The nose showed rustic earth with dark berries and some leather on the back with a clove finish. The bottle was good but approaching the end of its peak I feel.

1994 Bryant – Named second place in the blind tasting, this bottle was outstanding. The nose we magnificent showing bright red cherries and raspberries with undertones of soft tobacco and some hints of crushed gravel. The palate was very good but slightly disappointing. The tannins were still hard, not yet evolving to the soft plush mouthfeel that I know this wine can achieve.

1998 Harlan – A darker style of wine showing plums and black currants backed by tobacco and dark chocolate. There was a handful of spice on the mid palate and a finish of deep red roses.

1986 Haut Brion – I had high hopes for this wine but it ended up showing old shoe box with funky barnyard and old saddle leather. Many of the 1st growths from 86 have been closed down and not showing well, I am afraid that I will have to add the Haut Brion to that list…

1990 Haut Brion – Hello wine of the night! Wow! It has been more than a year since I had this bottle last and I must say that it is as good as if not better than I remember. The nose showed classic notes of Bordeaux earth with gravely soils and dark rich fruit. The wine was plush in the mouth with brilliant balance showing dark chocolate, anise, and blackberries. This bottle well deserved the trophy.

1982 Pichon Lalande – The 82 Pichon Lalande has won the won of the night in two tastings before this one. At last the king has been dethroned. The Pichon put up a valiant fight though showing classic green notes of bell pepper and cut grass that I always associate to this bottle as well as damp rustic earth, pleasant clove notes, and lovely blue and black fruit on the finish.

1983 Haut Brion – A great bottle of wine but getting toward the end of its days. Soft tannins with dried black fruit backed by classic gravely minerality.

1995 Bryant Family – Another strong effort in the tasting showing brilliant bright red cherries and a well balanced mixture of chocolate, tobacco, and cedar. The palate was soft and evenhanded with lovely red fruit and well integrated tannins.

1988 Margaux – I was very impressed with the Margaux. The wine was showing dry dusty fruit but with impressive acidity and great structure. I decanted the wine almost five hours before the event and it was the perfect amount of time.

1980 Opus One – Classic old Cali Cab. The wine was showing old dried blue and black fruit with notes of lavender, cedar, and dill.

1986 d’Yquem – d’Yquem is always a fun bottle. This one was a little thin on the mid palate lacking the syrupy thickness that I normally get from this prestigious house, even in an older vintage. The wine showed quince, honeyed pear, and lilies on the nose and palate.

1999 Bruno Giacosa Neive Barbaresco – When I first opened this bottle is was rather muted and uncharacteristically fruit forward. After almost eight hours in the glass the wine became a monster showing huge earthy notes of forest floor with big dusty tannins and a pleasantly light palate. Everything that I love from Barbaresco was present in this wine…

1978 Cheval Blanc – We have had this bottle on many occasions but this one was not drinking all that well. The wine was somewhat weedy and lacked that punch that I normally get from the 78 Cheval. Still not bad but not great either…. Provenance issues?

1990 Latour – I have had this bottle several times in the past and have been very disappointed with it. The bottle that we opened up Friday has restored my faith. While the wine was still tight, it was showing lovely red cherry notes backed by violets and damp earth. IN another two years I think this wine will be stunning. Thank you 90 Latour for finally coming around!

1986 La Mission Haut Brion – Another bottle that has been stunning in the past but was disappointing upon opening….

1991 Dujac Clos st Denis – This was an absolutely wonderful bottle of wine. Bigger in style with big black berries and exciting minerality. It needed some time to open up but once it got going it was fantastic.

Drinking Some Good Wines

By: AJ McClellan

Last night was a good one with a full house and a great lineup of wines opened on the table. The Remoissenets were the highlight of the night but I was also impressed with the Pichon and Revana…

2008 Cinq Cepages – This bottle is becoming a standard on the table at Graileys. Great ripe fruit notes with subtle oak and nice spice.

2007 Vieux Chateau Certan – I think this bottle is drinking like a champ. After a few hours of being open the wine shows rich ripe strawberry and black cherries with smoking tobacco and tilled earth.

2008 Conn Valley Eloge – A great effort by Conn Valley. The 08 Eloge is drinking very well with forward red and black fruits and a nice backing of dark chocolate and cooking spice.

2007 Revana Cabernet – In the past I have not been overly impressed by the Revana Cabernets. This 07 has changed a lot in the year and a half since I last tasted it. The tannins have softened considerably and the fruit has bloomed showing big red cherry and plum notes. There was a hint of leather on the palate with clove and anise. A very nice bottle of wine.

2009 Capture Alliance – I was slightly disappointed in this bottle of Capture. Maybe we simply did not give it enough time to open in the glass but it was drinking really tight and was muted on the nose and palate.

1969 Remoissenet Clos Vougeot – Remoissenet always shows. Smooth tannins with a pleasing acidity and bright vibrant red fruit notes that defy the age of the bottle.

1966 Remoissenet Lavaux St Jacques – Very similar to the Clos Vougeot but darker on the nose and palate with slightly more earth and a touch of liquorish.

2007 The Famous Gate Pinot Noir – Easy pleasing Pinot with big black fruit and a medium body.

2005 Mortet Gevrey Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs – This is just a fin bottle of wine. Every time I try this wine it gets better and better. Big red fruit with subtle earthy notes that I think will bloom with more time in the bottle. This wine is drinking well now but I think it will really hit its stride in another 5-10 years.

2007 Dumol Russian River Chardonnay – Rich butterscotch with honeyed pear and lime zest.

1989 Pichon Lalande – A great way to finish the night! Big earth notes on the nose and palate, classic Bordeaux funk with forest floor and tilled soil combined with dry black cherries and currants. The palate was soft and smooth, drinking a little too easily. A wonderful bottle.
