We sealed the week with a trio of terrific old Bordeaux, aged to perfection: 1988 Chateau l’Angelus, 1985 Leoville Las Cases and 1989 Cantemerle. The 1988 Angelus was stunning straight from the bottle with gorgeous elements of dried tea, dried tobacco, turned earth and dried violets. The fruit was beautifully present and the wine was cashmere smooth with a killer finish that seamlessly shadowed its dried sweet herbs and preserved crushed mulberry fruit. Simply Gorgeous!
The 1985 Leoville Las Cases was my favorite of the night! Also singing straight from the bottle with vibrant aromatics, deep and complex palate and a finish that lingered with every essence of flavor. Ripe cigars and black currant swim around the palate with youthful intensity while crushed gravel, sweet eucalyptus and dense spice held this multi-layered wine in one beautiful piece.
1989 Cantemerle- Oak derived spices drove the palate with delicate fruit following suite. Not as explosive as it once was but beautifully silky and elegant in the palate.
