Champagne in the Membrane!

No one knows how to make a normal Wednesday the Best Day Ever better than our dear friend Champagne Dave. After a little winter hiatus, DC dropped by Graileys for what was to be just a glass, but in his generous nature he turned a normal Wednesday into its own spectacular event! He started with a bottle of the 2002 Krug and what a showing!! We loved this wine at the Krug dinner and was only reminded of how awesome this Champagne is when Champagne Dave opened his first bottle.

There is no going down after an ’02 Krug so Dave opened a bottle of the 1982 Dom Perignon P3! BOOM! Ripe and creamy with notes of caramelized pear, golden apples, Asian melon core with rich vanilla, sweet aioli, marscapone, caramel and sweet cream. The finish was toasty, minerally, just as rich and forever haunting… I can’t thank DC enough for this ridiculously awesome wine experience.

How do you top a bottle of DP ’82 P3? With a bottle of 1998 Krug Clos d’Ambonnay of course! What a rockstar Champagne!! Sheer strength, power, core minerals, ripe fruit, freshly baked sourdough loaf and brilliant purity. What a beauty!!

After 3 back to back mind-blowing champagnes, the next Champagne had to be a different in style so we went with the 2003 Dom Perignon Jeff Koons edition Rose. The ’03 DP Rose is one of my favorite rose Champagnes. It’s seductive with gorgeous ripe berry fruit, clean minerality, great weight and mouth coating creamy bubbles. Fellow member and close friend, Ace, followed suit with a bottle of 2006 Louis Roederer Cristal- a killer Champagne that’s loud, rich and simply glorious. This is one of my favorite young Champagnes that is great for the glass now.

With all of these amazing bubbles on the table, two little Fox’s came to play and opened up two 80’s rockstars: a 1989 Veuve Clicquot Cave Privee and a 1988 Delamotte Collection Blanc de Blancs.  The ’89 Cave Privee was showing at its prime with notes of soft brioche, wild yellow field flowers, orchard fruits and warm spice while the ’88 Delamotte Collection Bland de Blancs was a fantastic gem loaded with preserved lemons, quince, soft vanilla and savory hints of truffles and lively minerality. There are not enough words to give these special bottles justice. This was truly a spectacular celebration of wonderful friends expressed through millions of creamy bubbles of remarkable Champagne.
