Mayacamas !

What a night last night . We hosted Jimmy Hayes from Mayacamas and tasted thru a very impressive line up of vintage wines from this historic winery.  The three vintages of Chardonnay we tasted drank exceptionally well. The 2001 is  still showing plenty of fruit, while the broader styled 2007 was extremely well balanced with nice aged baked apple flavors, although my favorite was the 2012  which was helped by a glorious growing season. This wine was flashy and vibrant with killer precision. Next up was a trio  of Cabs . The 1999 vintage was just sumptuous with perfectly integrated tannins that have fleshed out to reveal a soft and complex wine full of life.  The 2002 vintage was more muscular and fruit forward. This was another great vintage in Napa and this wine is going to age effortlessly. We finished our tasting with a 2009 Mayacamas  that is built for the long haul. These wines have their own personality running through them and this winery really is a special place and you get a sense of  it when drinking these vintages.

Andy Erickson and his team are keeping the traditions of this winery thriving.

I visited with Andy earlier this year and was blown away by the location, high atop Mount Veeder. The wildness  and old school natural habitat of the vineyards and old stone winery  has a real sense of history about the place and it shines through in these terrific genuine wines.

As is Graileys tradition our members delved into their personal cellars and some stunning wines were shared.

The highlight for me being a superb 1982 Figeac that was rocking.Kudos to Bill for opening it and more so for cooking a killer Pheasant risotto. A classic Graileys night all around. Lafite, Haut Brion , Meo Camuzet and the gong. Here is a list of the wines that were opened

1996 Etienne Sauzet Batard Montrachet, 1996 Leroy Gevrey Chambertin 1er Les Combottes, 1990 Meo Camuzet Clos de Vougeot, 1996 Meo Camuzet Clos de Vougeot, 1988 Haut Brion, 1999 Lafite, 1982 Figeac, 1981 Grange, 1997 Tignanello, 1986 Bertani Amarone , 1995 Joseph Drouhin Romanee st Vivant, 1997 Rostaing Cote Rotie, 1999 Sesti Brunello di Montalcino, 2010 Torbreck Les Amis, 1983 Jordan, 2010 Roy Estate Cabernet, 2009 Jack Quinn Cabernet, 2012 Bevan Ontogeny Red Blend, 2010 d’Ardhuy Corton Charlemagne La Vigne Dieu, 2010 Favia Cerro Sur, 2009 Arnaud Ente Meursault 1er Goutte d’Or, 1994 Pichon Lalande, 1997 Hubert de Montille Pommard 1er Les Rugiens.

A Pair of Bevan Beauties

By: Ryan Tedder

bevan blog

Wow-what a pair of great bold reds from Russell Bevan and Bevan Cellars! We did a nice little sampler packs of his amazing new releases this last week and we had the chance drink through two of the biggest, baddest reds in the lineup. These 2012 Cab Blends were both popped and decanted for a few hours and they could not be more hedonistically different! The 2012 Bevan Cellars Ontogeny Red is 65% Cab Sauv, a whopping 25% Petite Verdot and 10% Cab Franc and with air the velvety texture of the PV and its exotic floral violets complexity married perfectly with the creme de cassis, black berries, pipe tobacco, graphite and melted fudge. Sweet, supple tannins, juicy ripe fruit and a mouth-coating richness. I would stockpile this wine personally and I bought 6 bottle actually!! You should too. We have a little bit available and give us a call if you want to grab some-214-741-1855.  You will be happy!  The other wonderful red was the 2012 Bevan Cellars Sugarloaf Mountain. It is their equal part Merlot and Cab Franc Right Bank Blend. Simon compared it to Chateau Pavie in 2005-quite the comparison!  Notes of unsmoked cigar tobacco, forest floor, pen ink mulberries, blackberries and spring flowers soar from the glass. The wine possesses great intensity, remarkable unctuosity and thickness, and perfect integration of acidity, alcohol, tannin and wood. A wine to lay in the cellar and drink over the next 30 years! Every bit the part of a 100 Point wine with a long story to tell as it ages. Bravo to Russell Bevan for these fantastic 2012s!

Once in a Lifetime Colgin Herb Lamb Vertical 1992-2007

By: Ryan Tedder

Colgin vertical

Last Saturday night was, without a doubt, one of the most epic nights of Cult Cali Cab drinking that the world has ever seen! Our dear friend Ivan joined us along with a group of 14 of the best wine people in DFW. We drank through the entire library of the Herb Lamb Cabernet Sauvignon from 1992 to 2007. From 1992 to 1998 Helen Turley crafted the wines and we did a dinner with those wines in the boardroom. Our good friend Sharon Hage crafted a superlative multicourse meal that everyone loved and made this unreal lineup taste even better if that is even possible?!? In 1999 Marc Aubert took over for his mentor, Helen, and made the wines from 1999 to 2005. His wines showed wonderful polish and a forward, gregarious style that was enjoyed by all. In 2006 & 2007 Allison Tauziet of Far Niente previously made the last 2 vintages and her wines exuded personality as well. The Helen Turley wines were other-worldly and the lineup of 1992 to 1997 was the single best Napa Cab lineup I have ever tasted! I paired the 90s vintages with Top 40 #1 Hits from the summer and harvest times in each year that proved to be a great time!

We started with the 2000 to 2007 vintages up front in a tasting format with a lively discussion about the best wines and surprises. During this time, we tasted through and decanted all of the older wines in the boardroom. Needless to say, they smelled amazing. They tasted even better!! Flowers, fruit, unreal sweet, lightly caressing tannins, head complexity – unreal!

The #1 Hits Line Up for the Night Included:

1992 – Baby Got Back, Sir Mix A Lot

1993 – I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That), Meatloaf

1994 -I’ll Make Love to You, Boyz II Men

1995 – This is How We Do It, Montell Jordan

1996 – Macarena, Los Del Rio

1997 – Mo Money Mo Problems, Notorious BIG and Puff Daddy

1998 – I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, Aerosmith

1999 – Smooth, Santana

Colgin 07

2007 – Extraordinary bouquet of crushed rocks, creme de cassis, bay leaf, dark chocolate and forest floor. It is an exuberant, full-bodied, pure Cabernet. Just a baby.

2006 – Exhibits classic notes of creme de cassis, charcoal/creosote, chocolate, and subtle toasty oak along with beautiful ripeness, sweet tannin, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. I preferred this to the 2005.

2005 – Hint of bay leaf intermixed with chocolate, creme de cassis, and a bit of espresso, this wine boasts outstanding density, purity, full body, and good acidity and freshness. Needs more time in the bottle to flesh out.

2004 – Shows lots of lavender, bay leaf, black currants and cedarwood. It is a relatively mature, medium to full-bodied, complex multi-layered, beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon. My #2 of the front line-up.

2003 – Displays notes of lavender, forest floor, red and black currants. Fleshy and round with good purity and a 30- to 35-second finish, This was open-knit, complex, and fully mature. Drinking soft, refined and hedonistically.

2002 – Bravo! Uber aromatic. Scents of unsmoked, high-class tobacco, underbrush, spice box, black currants, chocolate and espresso. It is seriously endowed, elegant, and fully mature. Loads of class in this wine.

2001 – Notes of black olive tapenade, bay leaf, creme de cassis, charcoal and hints of truffles as well as new saddle leather emerge from this opaque purple-hued 2001. The gorgeous perfume is followed by rich, concentrated, full-bodied flavors, sweet tannin and beautiful intensity, purity and balance. This was my hands down favorite of the front lineup!

2000 – This was the most unique of the front room offerings. Smelled like left bank Bordeaux from the early 90s. The wine had a vinous, mature quality with dried flowers and dry dark fruit, Soft, medium bodied and interesting for its sweet savory interplay.

Colgin 92

1999 – The first year by Mark Aubert. Definitely a behemoth. I thought this wine was in need of another 5-7 years of the cellar. Dark, brooding with violets, tobacco, blackberry, and cassis on the nose. Closed and not expressive on the finish except for extract and oak. It will soften with time.

1998 – Helen Turley’s last year and her poorest effort of this string of 7 years she did. Medium bodied with nice red fruit, spices, roses, raspberries and a silky smooth texture. It just wasn’t “other-worldly” like the 92-97 lineup.

1997 – Wowza! This was my #2 for the back lineup. Loaded with raw dark power. Some other in the room placed it 3-5 for the 8 wines. Fudge, espresso, blackberry pie, cassis, dried herbs, lavender, violets, dark leather, black plums. Wonderful refined power in the style of great Latour with a darker profile than the other Turley wines save the 1993 – which retained a darkness to it.

1996 – Another spectacular bottle with over-the-top floral characteristics of raspberry compote, wild spring flowers, lavender, rosemary, cherries jubilee, sweet and exotic spices, a silky, lush texture that inspires reverence. Its 1994 vol. 3 after the 1995… Wow

1995 – This was the 1994 volume 2. Like most sequels it was not as good the original, but it was damn good! Much as in the nature of the “Back to the Future” movies, version #2 was surprisingly superlative. That over the top aromatic perfume of flowers, sweet red, exotic spices and flowers, raspberry and cherry compote-this wine rocks! It has smooth satin textural oo-la-la in spades that rivaled any Cali Cab I have drank.

1994 – Without a doubt the #1 wine of the night! This wine was like rolling through a field of flowers with all of your favorite sweet reds fruits you can imagine and an extremely alluring supple, caressing, love-making tannin that I have never experienced in such a wonderfully hedonistic way. If I was a single man I would marry this wine. A bucket list wine for any serious Napa Cab drinker.

1993 – This wine would not quit! A dark, brooding mysterious style of Herb Lamb that lacked the outright flamboyance of the 94-96 lineup. It had more nuance on the nose with a myriad of dry herbs, dried rose petals and lavender, graphite, a light smoky nose, mulled Bordeaux-like fruit.  A delight to drink.

1992 – A wine drinking it its apex currently. Showed the promise of the 1994 but the wow factor was slightly lower if that is even possible? Showing more dried flowers and pronounced gravelling minerality. Maybe it is entering the third phase of Colgin Herb Lamb drinking with more savory notes coming through the the fruit moving to the background? It should be a delight to follow either way! What a shame these are so hard to come by…

All in all, this was one of the best wine drinking nights of mine and most other people’s lives. Bravo Graileys and our wonderful Members!

First Week of November

So many great bottles of wine were opened last week with Friday capping the week with the Jones Family Wine Dinner and the amazing labels that were opened afterwards. Some of the most impressive wines I have had all year were opened last week with the 1982 Cos d’Estournel topping it all. This bottle was like a Bordeaux time capsule as it was surprisingly so fresh!! The aromatics were so vibrant and boastful with plump black and blue fruits and lush purple florals. The palate was even better with smoothed down tannins giving this wine an elegant silky texture rich in sweet licorice and loads of spice, cedar, deep minerals, and a touch of smoky sweet BBQ roast. The finish was long and seductive as its flavors jumped out to grasp your attention one after the other: “Hollah~~!!”

My second favorite wine(s) of the week was a tie of two extremes: the 1971 Camille Giroud Chambertin Grand Cru and the 1981 Penfolds Grange Hermitage. The 1971 Camille Giroud Chambertin GC was one of those wines that I will always remember. It was so complex with flavors that were still incredibly vibrant, tannins still present but not gripping, and a finish that wouldn’t end. This 43 year old wine still possessed dense black cherry and dark wild berry fruit while intricate layers of dried herbs, dirty mushrooms, and rich earth coated the palate. This is one of the best 70s Burgundy I have had at Graileys yet! The 1981 Grange was mind-blowing on the opposite end of the spectrum. Only four years older than me, this world-famous multi-appellational Syrah has aged wonderfully. Its once youthful, brooding flavors and masculine tannins matured into a beautiful wine that expressed notes of deep cedar, crème de cassis, and smoky charcoal; with sweet and smoky spices that lingered along as the night went on.
11.07.14
We ended Friday night with two great vintage Champagnes: the 1999 Salon Blanc de Blancs Brut Les Mesnil and the 1996 Dom Perignon OEnotheque Brut. I keep going back and forth on which of the two I preferred, but in the end, the 1996 Dom Perignon OEnotheque Brut won by a thin strand. The ’96 OEnotheque was marvelous! It was toasty, it was powerful, and it was better than good! There were lighter notes of lemon and sweet brioche upfront while the mid-palate offered a powerful structure and deeper flavors of toast and smoke. The bubbles were creamy and elegant and the finish was clean and long. The ’99 Salon had a gamut of nuts, from fresh hazelnuts to toasted Marcona almonds. This Champagne showed more baked apple and pear fruit with more nuances of baking spices in the mid-palate and a stretched out minerally finish that was equally appealing.

I can reflect on all the great bottles that were opened last week and especially on Friday; but I do not want to take up your time in reading a novel-like blog. So take a look at the list of amazing wines that were enjoyed by your friends and ours at Graileys and do not hesitate to let us know your own experiences on these great wines.

Guys Night Tasting At Graileys

By: Ryan Tedder

blog guy 2

We had a wonderful time earlier this week with a very diverse and enjoyable Guys Tasting Group with a wide array of memorable wines. Two of our newest members invited some of their friends and someone’s Italian mother cooked up an amazing meal that could have fed an army as we drank through some old and new gems. The line-up for the night was all reds and consisted of these greats:

2012 Roar Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands

2000 Chateau Potensac

2003 Del Dotto Cab Missouri U State

2005 Winston Hill from Frank Family

2000 Leoville Barton

1995 Pian delle Vigne Brunello

2008 Prunotto Bric Turot Barbaresco

2010 Clos Saint Michel Grand Vin Chateauneuf-du-Pape

2010 Favia Cerro Sur

1988 Mastrojanni Riserva Brunello

2009 David Sterza Amarone Classico

2012 Migration Pinot Noir??

1993 Bruno Giacosa Faletto Barolo

2001 Verite Le Desir

2012 Scholium Project Gardens of Babylon

blog guy 3

These were the best 5 of the tasting. The Winston Hill was showing amazingly smooth with a refined, mature quality paired with its sweet fruit and lengthy finish. The 2001 Verite La Muse was showing powerfully and was rugged but Bordelais in style. This Cab Franc inspired blend was everything Right Bank with California power. The 1993 Giacosa Barolo was my wine of the night and is a personal favorite. The 2000 Leoville Barton can go for another 50 years and was riverting while the Favia just started opening up. It was ridiculously complex and worth seeking out! A great way to start the week!

Monday Funday at Graileys

Great to be back at Graileys after vacationing in the mountains of Virginia to help friends open their first restaurant. I heard I missed out on another great week at Graileys, but I sure did jump right back into the Graileys’ flow with a great Monday night. We tasted a 1982 Beychevelle which was just as brown as Crayola can get and was filled with notes of mature leather, toasted cedar, and espresso grinds. The palate was also dominantly showing espresso and charred tobacco with only slight hints of brambly blue fruit coming from the good percentage of Merlot that is involved in this Cabernet Sauvignon leading Fourth Growth. The tannins were soft and the finish was shorter than expected, but boy (along with the First Growth of which I am about to describe) what a great “Welcome Back to Graileys” the wines were last night.

We also tried a 2001 Mouton Rothschild which was explosive on the nose with juicy, candied red berries, red apple skins, cinnamon spice and sweet red flowers hitting the nose along with fresh herbs, cedar, sweet cigar paper, and young leather. The tannins were softer than expected but the finish was long with tobacco, red fruit, and a touch of sweet smoked spice that delicately lingered on and on.

A 2009 Arnaud Ente Meursault Les Petits Charrons was opened which always makes me happy. It had Meyer lemon curd, sweet herbs, and a wonderfully long finish that I fall in love with every single time. Perhaps I am biased towards the Ente brothers’ wines, as Benoit Ente crafts killer wines from vineyards and neighboring villages not too far from his brother Arnaud.

I tasted some great wines whilst in Virginia too. One of the most memorable wines we had was during a special dinner at my friends’ not-yet finished restaurant: the 2011 Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese (which we have available on Graileys’ shelves). It had sweet stone fruits like yellow peach and fresh apricot with layers of passion fruit and quince. The vibrant notes of lemon curd and limestone minerals balanced out the sweetness of the fruit and it had this amazing creamy, mouth coating texture and a great long finish. We paired it to a wild watercress and potato soup with shredded potato and pickled onion salad with herbs and lemon and this combination was striking! The wine is great on its own, but with food: it really turns into something else.

As great of a time I had away, it feels so wonderful to be back. So far we have enjoyed a flight of Billecart-Salmon and the favorites were the 1999 Nicolas Francois Grand Cru, the NV Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru and the Billecart Brut Rose. The wine I am enjoying now as I type this blog you ask? 1992 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux Grand Cru, 2000 Leroy Savigny-les-Beaune, 2000 Louis Jadot Le Musigny Grand Cru. And it is only Tuesday… Graileys truly is a one of a kind experience for Fine Wine. It feels SO great to be back!

Other Great Wines from Monday Night
2005 Winstong Hill Red Blend, Rutherford, CA
2001 Verite Le Desir Red Blend, Sonoma County
2000 Leoville Barton
1993 Bruno Giacosa Barolo
2010 Favia Cerro Sur Red Blend, Napa

Always a Good Night at Graileys.

By: AJ McClellan

photo 1

I tasted a great handful of wines last night. The highlight for me was the 2008 Camille Saves Champagne that was simply smoking! This small production bottle of bubbles was full of apricot and green apple skins. I was very pleased with the soft effervescence of the wine and the complex long finish.

I also had a soft spot in my heart for the 2004 Poetry Cabernet which was one of my favorite bottles to sell back at Graileys old location. The fruit was soft and supple with nice black and blue notes. The Poetry compared nicely with the 2011 Favia Cabernet Sauvignon that we opened with it. The Favia was darker on the nose and palate and full of rich tannins. While young, I was very impressed with the Favia especially with the 2011 bottling.

One other bottle that I feel is worth mentioning is the 1999 Groffier Chambolle Musigny Les Sentiers. This wine was singing! Bright Bing cherry and loads of minerality were the hallmarks of this gorgeous wine.

Other great wines that we tasted on the night were…

2003 Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet, 2006 Vina Ardanza Vina Real Gran Reserva, 2010 Penfolds Cab/Shiraz, NV Krug 375ml, 1996 Jadot Chevalier Montrachet, 1995 Camille Giroud NSG Les Cailles, 2011 Gargiulo Vineyards Money Road Ranch Cabernet, 2011 Dancing Hares, 1998 Quilceda Creek Cabernet, 2007 Vina Ardanza Imperial Gran Reserva, 2008 Gargiulo Vineyards OVX
